When it comes to dealing with addictions, many believers approach the issue from a position of defeat — struggling, striving, and constantly falling back into the same cycle of guilt. But God’s Word makes it clear: sin shall not have dominion over you.
Romans 6:14
New King James Version
New King James Version
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
That means addiction does not have the final say. The believer’s reality is not one of bondage but of freedom through Christ Jesus.
Yesterday, we established that addiction is a form of bondage — a stronghold that seeks to control your desires, emotions, and habits. But today, we go a step further: to understand how to walk in this consciousness of our new life in Christ.
One major way to build this consciousness is to give time to prayer. Prayer helps in strengthening your convictions, and this is very important for the believer to break free from addictions.
John 8:36
New King James Version
New King James Version
36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
That word “indeed” means truly, completely, unquestionably.
You are not fighting for freedom; you are enforcing it. You are not trying to earn it; you are walking in what’s already yours.
Freedom is your inheritance in Christ. The same way healing belongs to you, peace belongs to you, freedom belongs to you. You just have to walk in it.
When Jesus died and rose again, He didn’t just defeat sin; He disarmed it of its power over you.
Colossians 2:15
New King James Version
New King James Version
15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
Notice again the past tense: disarmed, triumphed.
The stronghold of addiction has been broken. Its authority was stripped the moment Jesus declared, “It is finished.”
That means your struggle is not with a powerful addiction; it’s a defeated one trying to convince you it’s still in control.
The devil’s strategy is deception. He wants you to see yourself as bound when you’ve already been set free.
But when your eyes open to the reality of Christ’s finished work, you stop fighting as a victim and start walking as a victor.
You must renew your mind daily to walk in this truth. Freedom begins in your spirit, but it is maintained in your mind. You can be free in Christ yet still live bound if your thoughts haven’t changed.
Romans 12:2
New King James Version
New King James Version
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…
The word “transformed” means changed from the inside out. That’s what God wants to do with you. He doesn’t just want you to stop doing the wrong thing — He wants to change what you desire altogether.
How?
1. By filling your mind with the truth of His Word.
Every day you must consciously replace lies with truth:
• “I’ll always struggle with this” → “Whom the Son sets free is free indeed.” (John 8:36)
• “It’s just who I am” → “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
As you renew your mind, your desires change. The grip weakens. The chains fall.
2. Enforce your authority in the name of Jesus. Freedom is not passive. You must enforce it.
Just as Jesus overcame temptation by speaking God’s Word aloud.
Luke 4:1-4
New King James Version
1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
New King James Version
1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
4 But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’
You too must use your words to enforce your victory. When those old cravings or thoughts arise, don’t negotiate with them — speak to them.
Declare, “In the name of Jesus, I have dominion over this. You no longer have power over me.”
Addiction loses its strength when you stop staying silent. The devil thrives in your silence, but he trembles at your confession of truth.
Mark 16:17 reminds us:
New King James Version
New King James Version
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons…
You have the authority to cast down every spirit, habit, or thought that contradicts your new life in Christ.
Addiction grows in darkness, but it dies in the light. You were not created to walk this journey alone. God’s design is that you grow within a community that prays, encourages, and holds you accountable.
James 5:16
New King James Version
New King James Version
16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.
Freedom flourishes when you walk with the right people — people who will remind you of who you are in Christ when your flesh tries to tell you otherwise.
And finally, you must keep your eyes on Jesus, not your weakness.
When Peter walked on water, he stayed afloat as long as his eyes were on Jesus. The moment he focused on the waves, he began to sink (Matthew 14:29-30).
That’s how it is with addiction. The more you focus on your weakness, the stronger it seems. But when you fix your gaze on Christ — your deliverer, His strength overshadows your struggle.
You are the righteousness of God in Christ. You are seated with Him in heavenly places. You walk in authority, dominion, and victory over sin, addiction, and every bondage of darkness.
So today, rise up with confidence.
Walk as one who has already overcome.
Addiction is defeated. You are free.
Prayer Point
Lord, I thank You because I am free indeed.
Every addiction and bondage has lost its power over me.
I walk in the authority and victory that Christ has given me.
My mind is renewed, my desires are changed, and I live in the reality of freedom in Jesus’ name. Amen.
