Unashamed: A Bold Witness
Romans 1:16
Have you ever had an idea or a suggestion and because you were bold enough to say something about it, it was acted upon and became a reality?
This week, we have been speaking about how as Christians, we have to live our lives in a manner that does not conform to the dictates of this world, how we have to be different and today we will be delving into something extremely important, which is being bold witnesses
Romans 1:16
New King James Version
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
The Apostle Paul says that he wasn’t ashamed because the gospel is the power of God to salvation. He understood the gravity of what he had received and he was unashamed about it. And this should be our lifestyle as believers, constantly unashamed of the gospel.
We as believers sometimes are ashamed of speaking out of being bold because we are scared of being rejected or castigated, of being mocked or of seeming or sounding extreme but this can’t be the case. Apostle Paul could boldly say that he was not ashamed of the gospel, because he knew the power of it; you know the power of the message, so you can go out and speak it unashamedly!
Acts 4:29-31
New King James Version
29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word,
30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”
31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
In the chapter before this, Peter and John were witnessing boldly about Jesus, where they met a lame man and he was healed and we see Peter and John being persecuted. And in these verses, we see their response to the persecution. They prayed and asked for boldness! So as you pray, you ask for boldness, as you pray, you take from within and put upon, as you pray, you stir up yourself and bring to your consciousness that you have been sent by God. This is very important.
Acts 5:41-42
New King James Version
41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.
42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
The Bible helps us to understand that they counted it all joy to suffer shame on account of God’s name. The response of the Apostles to persecutions and rejections was not shame, but rather it was boldness.
Acts 4:20
New King James Version
20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
This was after they were released. The Apostles were threatened but this was their response.
And to be bold does not mean being insensitive about a subject matter or being obnoxious, but rather being confident, being clear.
Let’s consider practical ways to be a bold witness
1. Sharing your testimony with other people
John 4:39
New King James Version
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.”
This was the Samaritan woman at the well with Jesus and Jesus tells her if she knew who He was, she’d ask Him for living water, which would become a spring of eternal life, quenching thirst forever. He tells her about her life and ultimately tells her that he is the Messiah. Her response to that was not being shy or keeping quiet! She went round and told everyone about it unashamedly.
2. Involving yourself in gospel conversations, not just being in the back seat but being bold enough to respectfully correct a subject matter that is being misinterpreted.
3. Publicly declare your faith
You, dear believer, cannot be silent about your faith. You have to speak up.
4. Living Visibly as a Christian
Your life and actions have to match your words. You have to stand out in whatever you do, upholding the gospel.
And the good news about this is that you aren’t doing it by your power. The Spirit of God enables you to do it.
The gospel is not something to whisper apologetically—it’s the power of God that saves lives, transforms destinies, and breaks chains. Every person you encounter needs this message, whether they know it or not. Your silence doesn’t protect you; it robs others of their chance to hear the truth. God hasn’t given you a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. It’s time to speak up, stand up, and show up for the gospel without shame or hesitation.
As we enter the new year, commit to being a bold gospel witness. This year, share your testimony with at least one person who doesn’t know Christ. Post about your faith on social media without apology. Pray for opportunities to speak about Jesus and for boldness when those opportunities come. Join or initiate an evangelism effort in your community.
Pray the prayer of Acts 4:29 daily: “Lord, grant to Your servants that with all boldness we may speak Your word.” Step into the new year and beyond with the conviction that you are unashamed of the gospel. Let your voice be heard, your faith be seen, and your life be a bold declaration that Jesus is Lord.
Prayer point
Lord, make me a bold witness of the gospel. From today onwards, my voice is heard, my life is a bold declaration that Jesus is Lord.
