Stir Up: Power
2 Timothy 1:7
Think about a king’s son who has been given full access to the throne. He has the royal seal, and he even has the king’s authority to back every word he says. But he sleeps at the gate and begs from people who pass by. He acts like a stranger instead of an heir, even though the palace is open to him and authority has been given to him, because he has forgotten who he is.
This is sad, but it is exactly what has happened to many believers. You have been given the Holy Spirit. The actual Spirit of the living God lives inside you. And that Spirit carries the same power that raised Jesus from the dead and also adopted you as an heir of the Father, in which you can now walk in authority.
But then, if that power lives in you, why are you living ordinarily? Why do you live in fear? Why are you still stuck in the same issues? Why do you face the same struggles?
You have power, but are you stirring it up?
Romans 8:11 says
New King James Version
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
When Jesus rose from the dead, He rose as the victorious King who death had no hold on. And the Bible says that same power is at work in you. The Spirit that raised Jesus is the same Spirit that lives in you. And you have to live with this knowledge evidently! You can’t be walking around with such power on your inside and keep acting like you have nothing.
From a prison cell, Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, his son in the faith and told him to stir up what he already had.
2 Timothy 1:6-7
New King James Version
6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
The word stir up means to fan to flame, to continuously feed coals or ashes until the fire catches again. And God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power!
You have been waiting for God to do something He has already done. He has been living inside you since the day you were saved. You need to stop treating the Holy Spirit like a placeholder in your life.
When you look at the book of Acts, you see different examples of what it means to live as a believer walking in power.
Acts 16:25-26
New King James Version
25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed.
After casting out a spirit from a possessed girl, Paul and Silas were flogged and thrown in prison. But at midnight, they prayed and sang hymns to God, and every chain came loose. The power inside these men shook the building and broke every chain in the place. They didn’t look at their situation and remained hopeless, they stirred up power.
Peter and John passed a man who had been crippled since birth. Peter looked at the man and declared, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk” (Acts 3:6), and the man got up and walked! That is what it looks like when a believer knows what they are carrying.
These were not special force Christians or perfect people. But they did not sit on what they had been given. They stirred up power, and they moved. You have the same Spirit they had, but you have been sitting on this knowledge for a long time.
You have been sitting on power while letting the devil work in oppression. You have been sitting on authority and letting fear direct all your decisions and living like an orphan instead of an heir filled with authority.
Ephesians 1:19-21
New King James Version
19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
This power is available to you, it is working in you. You are not waiting for any new power to fall, stir it up!
And you need to understand that stirring up the power of the Holy Spirit is not a feeling. You are not waiting for a wave of emotion to hit you. It is a decision, you must make conscious efforts, take up action:
First, always mindfully pray in the Spirit.
“…building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 1:20)
Praying in tongues is not a strange thing or for a select few. It is how you charge your spirit. It is how you fan to flame, it is a way to edify yourself and put your flesh down. You mustn’t get too familiar with the gift of tongues that you forget what it does in you as a believer; it’s not something you should do mindlessly.
Second, read the word of God.
You cannot stir up what you are starving. When you fill yourself up with the word of God, you easily move in faith, and circumstance can not shake you. Read the word with hunger and meditate on it.
Third, speak with boldness.
Speak to that mountain. Speak to that sickness. Speak to that fear. Speak to that temptation. Speak to every form of depression or pain. Declare what God says about you. In boldness, declare who you are, declare into every circumstance. Let the power of God move in spaces through you.
Fourth, act before you even feel ready. The power of the Holy Spirit is not activated by your emotions but by obedience. On the days you feel weak, the Spirit in you is still the same. On the days you feel like you are at a breaking point or you have failed, the power of God is still very potent. Always move by faith. Lay hands on someone when you have to. The power is inside you, use it.
You know you have the holy spirit, you believe he lives in you, but you have been ordinary for far too long.
Remember, you are not powerless. Get up, open your mouth, speak to that situation, declare what God says about you, pray like you know something will change. Let it be evident that you are filled with the power of God.
Prayer Point
Today, I stir up the power inside me. I declare that I no longer live in fear, I walk in boldness. Through the spirit of God in me, I take charge of every situation and circumstance.
