Gear Up: Sensitivity and Discernment
1 Chronicles 12:32
The modern-day man will tell you that one of man’s greatest inventions is WiFi. Some even say they can’t live without WiFi or internet connectivity.
How else would they stay in touch with loved ones or get the latest news as it drops, so they can stay in the know?
However, no matter how great WiFi is, if you’re in a place with the fastest and strongest network but you’re unable to connect, it’s all for nothing. It may be because you don’t know that this network exists or because you simply refuse to connect to it. It won’t matter either way, and the outcome stays the same; no connection.
It may surprise you to know that many believers live their lives this way. All the possible experiences and impact that one can get from a season of special meetings like these are already being stirred right now. Those who understand the times have already begun to see glimpses of this.
There is a set of people whom the Bible records just like this.
1 Chronicles 12:32
New King James Version
32 of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command.
At a very critical moment when the tribes of Israel needed to come together to go to war, many tribes rallied groups of thousands and tens of thousands. This sounds reasonable for a war, but then the Bible introduces us to the sons of Issachar, who “understood the times”, which means they were able to discern beyond the outlook of things, and their response was different.
Discernment is pivotal to how you are able to maximize all that is available in a season like this. There is a significant difference between a believer who is passive in a move of God and a believer who is tuned in and ready to receive, and that difference is discernment. And one of the most striking pictures of what it costs to lack this is found in the story of Jacob at Bethel.
Genesis 28:10,12, 16
New King James Version
10 Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran.
12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.”
Jacob was right in the middle of a divine encounter, but he was completely unaware of what was happening. God was there, the angels were moving, heaven was literally open over that spot, and Jacob was asleep.
The revelation came when he woke and finally saw it; his response was immediate.
There is something specific that God is doing in this gathering, a grace that has been prepared for this season, and the believers who will walk away most impacted are the ones whose spirits are sharp enough to recognise what is available and positioned enough to receive it fully, the ones who will not have to say afterwards, like Jacob almost did, that the Lord was in that place and they did not know it.
Now, you must sharpen that sensitivity as you prepare. Prayer is a way to do that. You can discern the move of God by the Spirit even before you step into camp.
The word of God is another means to train your spirit to recognise God’s voice and distinguish it from everything else competing for your attention.
These weeks of preparation are not separate from what will happen at camp. It is the foundation of it. Every moment you spend in prayer, in the word, you are sharpening the very instrument through which God will speak to you when you get there. You are tuning in before you arrive so that when the moment comes, your spirit is already alert and ready to recognise it.
Do not just show up to camp. Arrive tuned in and discerning what God wants to do in you specifically during those days. Come with your spirit sharp and your sensitivity high, because God is doing something in this season, and a dull spirit will miss it.
Prayer Point
Lord, as I approach this season of preparation, I sharpen my sensitivity and tune in to what you are doing. I position myself to receive everything you have prepared for me.
