The Servant's Heart 2
Psalms 51:17
At the crux of the Christian faith, beneath everything we believe in, is the love of God as evidenced by His sacrifice for us. This is the foundation of our faith, that God loved us and showed us this by coming as a man, dying our death, paying our debt and rising again giving all who believe eternal life. This is the greatest display of love.
John 3:16
New King James Version
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
As important as it is to understand this, you also have to understand that this is something that must be notable in our lives as well: love; love for God and love for others. God’s love is not just something to accept and believe in, it is also something to act on. It is a call to action to you to also love.
Philippians 2:5
New King James Version
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
In Jesus, we don’t just have a message to believe but an example to emulate and this pertains also to His love walk. The life of Jesus shows great love, beginning from the fact that in His love He made Himself of no reputation by coming as a man and He humbled Himself unto death even death on the cross. When you look at this the only thought on your mind shouldn’t just be “what a manner of love this is” or “oh how God loves me” as important as that is. You also have to see how you can show that kind of love to others in your daily life. When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, the response He gave was very important.
Matthew 22:36-40
New King James Version
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
It is our love for God and for others that will push us to keep all other commandments, in fact, the other commandments are built on these two things. So because you love God you won’t worship any other idol or call on His name in vain and because you love others you won’t steal or kill or commit adultery. The commandments are predicated on love and that’s why Jesus said it’s the greatest commandment.
Even at the basis of spiritual gifts, love has to be at the center of it.
I Corinthians 12:31
New King James Version
31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.
I Corinthians 14:1
New King James Version
1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
The most excellent way Apostle Paul was speaking about wasn’t a particular gift but that all the gifts should be done in love. Spiritual gifts aren’t to show who has more prowess or skills but for the edification of the church and this must be done in love. This is how we should live as believers.
Galatians 5:22
New King James Version
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Love is a fruit of your born again Spirit, so it is your nature to walk in love. This is why Apostle John can say in
I John 3:16
New King James Version
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
By understanding God’s love towards you, you are also to understand that you’re to walk in it and by the Holy Spirit in you, you’ve been empowered to do so. Day by day, it is important that in all you do, love takes the centre. Not just to your family but to everyone around you. Let it be evident that you walk in love, let this be your identity.
Prayer Point:
Lord, as I see Your love towards me as evidenced by Your sacrifice, I also walk in love. I am able to lay down my life for my brethren and I’m empowered to do so by your Spirit.
