In action movies, there’s almost always one fascinating scene. In this scene, everything in the background is in complete chaos yet, the protagonist remains calm and deals with the situation heroically.

This kind of scene is always as cool as it is baffling. The thought of remaining calm or unshakable while the world around you makes no sense is an ability everyone wants.

Well, for the believer, it is possible. It is part of our new nature.

Galatians 5:22

New King James Version

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

We have established that the fruit of the Spirit refers to the resultant effects of being carriers of God’s Holy Spirit. What happened in salvation did not only give you eternal life, it gave you a new mechanism that is at work in you while you are on earth.

This is the difference between believers and unbelievers. The things that we would want to do on our own that would be otherwise impossible, have now been made possible by the Holy Spirit at work in us.

On our own, we would always find it nearly impossible to constantly express the fruit of the Spirit. Imagine loving in a world that promotes hating anything that makes you uncomfortable—or being joyful when the situation calls for the opposite.

Now, how much more absurd does it sound to be peaceful when every country is raging with news of insecurity, economic crisis, and more?

Yet again, this is possible for the believer. Our peace does not come from our doings or the situations around us. It comes from who is with us. And because we are confident of this, our response to situations, no matter how turbulent must be peace.

Take Jesus and the disciples for example.

Mark 4:36- 40

New King James Version

36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with him.

37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that was already filling.

38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

39 Then He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, “Peace, be still!.” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

40 But He said unto them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”

In this text, the disciples were bewildered by the fact that Jesus was sleeping in such a life-threatening situation. They thought that he did not care about their lives. But on the contrary, Jesus expected more from them.

After he woke up and commanded the waters to be still, he then asked why they still have no faith!

Jesus expected them to not be scared. He expected them to know that as long as he was in that boat, nothing bad could happen to them.

And Jesus has the same perspective about you. If you are aware that the captain of peace lives on your inside, you ought not to be scared.

John‬ ‭14‬:‭27‬

New King James Version

27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

These were Christ’s words to his disciples before he died. He made a point to say that the peace he gives the world can’t give you. Meaning, if the world didn’t give this peace it can not take it away. The peace of God is not like that of the world because it is not circumstantial. Maybe in the world peace is the absence of a storm, but with the peace of God, there is calm even in the midst of the storm.

The devil enjoys using tough times to play games with the mind of the believer and causes doubt in God’s ability to keep us through every situation. This is one thing many believers do not realize.

However, if we take a cue from the early Christians, we will see that they remained established because their minds were fortified against such thoughts.

The Apostle Paul in prison would write to the church in Philippi saying this:

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭7‬

New King James Version

7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

This means that there is a kind of peace that transcends human comprehension, that aids you to remain firm in what God has called you to. One that does not allow even the toughest of times to break the knowledge that you have of God so you can always be at peace no matter what.

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭26‬:‭3‬

New King James Version

3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.

The Lord will keep you in perfect peace if you just keep your eyes on him. Rather than give all your time and attention to the storm happening around you, focus on God. Remind yourself of all he has said, remind yourself of who he is. In fact, rather than tell God about the situation, speak to that situation about the God you serve. Tell your problems about God!

As you go about your day, spend time studying the Word of God and reflecting on who you are as a man in Christ and all that has been made available to you to enjoy peace in all situations!

Prayer Point:

Father, I thank you can I can experience peace even when it doesn’t seem like it. I understand that peace for me is not dependent on the world around me but on who I carry. As one who houses God, I enjoy peace in every area of my life from today.
