Luke 18:1

We are entering into a season of prayer. And we must prepare and be ready to take advantage of everything that this period of devotional emphasis provided us.

I know we are a people of prayer and in that light, let us give everything we have in this season so we don’t miss out on what God is set to birth in this season.

Matthew 26:36-41

New King James Version

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.”

37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.

38 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”

40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?

41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Jesus walked in on them sleeping while he prayed and said “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?” This does not mean they did not pray at all rather it means that they did not pray enough. You can be praying, but are you praying enough?

The things of the Spirit are very similar. For them to have effect, it must be done at the right intensity and consistency. This is why we have special times of prayer and fasting. To help us buy back lost time and remind us of what amount of time and commitment that God requires from us.

Let’s read a text that we must be familiar with.

Revelation 4:10-11

New King James Version

10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:

11 “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”

In this text, we see a description of John’s vision. He describes elders falling before God in worship casting their crowns and saying, “You are worthy O Lord to receive glory and honour and power”.

The first thing to note here is the response of any creature before God.

God is so Holy, so separate, so big that our response must be worship. Isaiah stood before the Holiness of God and said I am undone.

Isaiah 6:1-5

New King James Version

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.

2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”

4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.

5 So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts.

This is the common reaction we see when met with the Holiness of God. And when we know this Holiness, our reaction must also be Holy, Holy, Holy. Our reaction must be worship. Not worship as in songs but a heartfelt devotion to God.

Secondly, the Bible says that all things are created for God’s pleasure. This means that at the root of all creation, there is already a need to please God. Unfortunately, humanity has tried every other thing except the one thing that would fulfill this need which is to worship God and chase him with all of his heart. This is why we exist!

Devotion to God is at the center of our existence!!!

If you are not praying, if you are not in communion with God then something is wrong. Special seasons of emphasis like this remind us that we are out of place when we are out of God’s presence. God’s presence is speaking specifically of the secret place.

A believer must never find himself too far from his prayer altar. Never too far from his source.

The Bible says in the book of

Luke 18:1

New King James Version

1 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.

To faint is the word ekkakeō and it means to be utterly spiritless, to be wearied out, exhausted.

You must always be fervent and not spiritless. Zealous and not weary. On fire and not cold. This is the reality of the man in Christ. He ought to be on fire.

This means that a man not always in the secret place would faint. This is why there are many ineffective believers out there. A believer without a prayer life would become ineffective.

The believer is to be in perfect communion with his maker. In koinonia, in intimacy, in burning devotion, in consistent alignment with God.

Jesus said in that same text

Matthew 26:41

New King James Version

41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

It was not that they had not prayed, again it was that they had not prayed enough. They had not prayed enough prayers to help them overcome temptations.
I believe that if Peter had prayed enough, maybe, just maybe he would have been able to overcome the temptation of betraying Jesus.

Catalyst Church and any other person reading or listening to this devotional, the time has come for you to see what prayer can afford you. This is the season to build back your prayer altar or at least strengthen it because prayer is one of the most important resources available to a believer. The season to experience effectiveness, because you prayed, is now!

Can you give everything you have in prayer and cook what needs to be cooked, strengthen yourself for all God has for you. Build yourself so you can last in the day of adversity. Build yourself so you can overcome temptation. Build yourself so you can face anything that comes.

We would be praying this way: As I give myself to prayer in this season, I don’t just pray till the clock is done, I pray till the job is done. I build tenacity in prayer.
