Have you ever found yourself singing a song you did not intentionally learn? It might even be one that you would not often listen to, but after hearing it more than once it never left your mind. This is how powerful the media space can be.

We have been learning about power and positions and how we as Christians are to shine as light in certain spheres of this world. Today, we will be looking at one of the most prominent of which is media. The media space is a means of mass communication, which includes print, broadcasting, films, music, and the Internet.

The devil has influenced society and culture by injecting his ideas and agenda into the world through the media. As believers who carry such a powerful message, one that can save the world from eternal damnation, it is important that we infiltrate the media to push the agenda of the kingdom.

John‬ ‭3‬:‭16

King James Version

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God desires to see that all men are saved. All men means the whole world and in this day and age, the media is the wisest and most efficient way to achieve this mandate. Every believer is called to preach the gospel. Some may be called into more traditional pulpit ministry but others who aren’t should make use of every platform available to broadcast the message of truth.

Matthew 5:14-16

New King James Version

14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

You are a city set on a hill, a light to shine before men. What these have in common is that they are not hidden. If there was a city on a hill you’d be able to see it even from a mile away. Our light must shine before men. The message must be visible. It must reach a larger audience.

This could be as basic as a social media account or as great as controlling media corporations or even owning media organizations. The point is to influence people through the media, propagating the Gospel.

In case you’re still wondering why you should, here are some reasons:

Firstly, the media is the quickest and easiest way to reach millions all around the world. Just imagine, every time content is posted within a moment billions of people have access to it. Statistics show that Instagram has 2 billion active monthly users. That is 2 billion people that could hear the gospel every single month.

Proverbs‬ ‭4‬:‭23‬

‬‬New King James Version

23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

This text highlights the role of the heart and its contents in determining one’s life course. It is therefore impossible to deny that what we see and hear matters a great deal and can influence more than just our thoughts and beliefs.

A good example of the power of media is the cartoons children watch. Do you have a younger one around you and every time he or she hears the intro tune of the cartoon, they will come running to watch it? A lot of us can still remember the themes shows and characters from our favourite childhood TV shows. The content of these cartoons has been broken down into acceptable, convincing, enjoyable, and easy-to-digest formats. This is an approach we can employ to our advantage. We can help shape the minds of the next generation with the truth of God’s word rather than leaving them prey to the lies of the enemy

Matthew 28:18-20

King James Version

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Another motivating factor for engaging with media is rooted in the Great Commission. Some of us find ourselves naturally inclined towards careers in media due to our God-given talents and interests. This presents an excellent opportunity to impact the world positively for Christ. Allow God to work through your career and the platform you have, directing it towards His divine purpose.

In conclusion, if you have a social media following of any sort, whether you like it or not you have a sphere of influence. It is then your responsibility to use that platform to draw men into the kingdom. It could mean posting kingdom content or sharing what others post. You can also render financial support to creators you know are doing the work of the Lord. The point is to use what you have available to you. Strive to promote the dissemination of God’s truth through media in every way possible.

Prayer Point:

I partner with God for the advancement of his kingdom. I make use of every available platform to see that the Gospel prevails.
