This Same Gospel
2 Timothy 2:2
History is one of the most important constructs of any nation or people, as it shapes identity and culture. Nations take pride in preserving their history because it is more than just memories; it encompasses experiences that have shaped the present. Museums and artifacts remind us of the importance of our cultural heritage and its progression over time.
These traditions and histories are usually preserved and passed down from generation to generation. They are treated with high regard, with many going to great lengths to maintain their integrity.
The same, if not greater, care should be applied to how we handle the gospel. The gospel is the bedrock of our faith, forming the core of what we believe in. Such an integral part of our faith cannot be left to chance; it must be preserved and cherished with utmost reverence.
There are several occasions that God Himself instructed His people to keep a particular ceremony or a day from generation to generation, meaning they should keep the culture or tradition alive through their generations.
Exodus 12:14
New King James Version
14 ‘So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance.’
Also in certain scriptures, it was about keeping the reputation and knowledge of God known through the generations.
Leviticus 23:43
New King James Version
43 that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
Now, when it comes to something with great fragility or sensitivity, you deal with it with great care. Imagine carrying an egg, you don’t just mindlessly carry it or throw it around because you are fully aware it can break. Even when it comes to objects that have high value, you are mindful of how you carry them.
Take a bar of gold for example, because of its high value, you esteem it as such. The same thing happens with information. Imagine you’ve been told the pin that can be used to detonate a large bomb, you’ll be very careful with this information, you’ll be careful not to let it go wrong, not to miss a number or mix it up, and to pass it on to the right people that can carry this information properly as well. You’ll be this mindful because you know that lives are at stake with what you know.
This is the same mind that men of old had with the gospel. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation! This is the information that determines your life eternally, it is much more important than the pin to detonate a bomb. Every single life in this world needs this message. With the knowledge of the sheer importance of what the gospel carries, there’s a preservation mentality that they walked with; and this is the same mentality we should have.
II Timothy 2:2
New King James Version
2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
There must be a faithfulness in keeping the things we’ve been taught and in keeping the integrity of the gospel. You must be seen as a faithful man and you must be able to commit it to faithful men that would give themselves to teach the word has it has been committed to us from scripture. Even if there is a difference in the delivery, the message must be the same. This is how we keep the integrity of the word.
Matthew 28:18-20
New King James Version
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
This is the message that saves, this is the message that we’ve been sent to preach to the whole world. You must be proactive in preserving it. You must be eager to contend for the faith, teaching all that had been taught in scriptures and not deviating from the truth.
Prayer Point:
Father, I believe in the integrity of the gospel and your word. I am faithful and committed in preserving and keeping it.
