Picture this: you’re in an airplane, flying over the clouds, maybe listening to some music or reading a book, and then the pilot says, “Now as you look out your window, to the left, we are flying past Mount Everest”. As you look out the window, peaking through the clouds, is the highest mountain in the world. How majestic a sight! You would have to fly approximately 29,000ft above sea level to see the peak of Mount Everest. It’s a monster of a structure. To think that even with how majestic and great the mountain is, it still has a creator.

1 Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest?”

There is a God that lives outside of space and matter that could create such a thing. To think that as big as that mountain is, there is a God that is even bigger than it is absolutely mind-blowing.

Do you know how big he must be for the earth to be his footstool? We couldn’t possibly know that big a God on our own even if we tried.

He’s too boundless, too separate for us to know him on our terms. Fortunately for us, God wants us to know him and choose to reveal Himself to us.

God has revealed himself to us in more ways than one, more than we can cover in one devotional. But one way He has revealed himself to us that is of great importance is through His Word.

His moral attributes can be discerned through what we see in scripture. For instance, we know that God is love:

8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.

So we know from salvation that God is love. God doesn’t just love he is love embodied. From all that he did in the Christ we can conclude that God is love.

His other attributes are also clearly seen through out scriptures. But the one of particular interest is the goodness of God.

The Bible attest to the fact that God is good, has always been good and will forever be good. He isn’t just good but he is the origin of good, the concept of good.

For something to be good it means it is worthy of approval; something that meets a standard. This implies that there is a transcendent standard of approval that dictates what is good. What is this standard you might ask? God himself!

5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

He is the perfect standard of goodness. He is light and in him, there is no darkness at all. He is incapable of anything other than good.

So when we say God is good we mean that his actions and ways are worthy of approval. He meets his standard because he is the standard. God is good and all that is good comes from God.

James 1:17

17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Every good and perfect gift is from above and comes from the father of lights. So you may have seen light but there is a Father of lights. You may know good people but God is good. He is the highest form of good and you can only trace good gifts to God. Does this mean that no evil exists in the world? No, but it does mean that God is not the author of evil.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭45

45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

There is rain and sunlight for the good and bad. God does not conjure evil on anyone. The notion that God was evil in the Old Testament and became good in the New Testament is very false. The scripture we read said that there is “no variation or shadow of turning”, meaning he didn’t change. He remains the same.

He is good through and through. This is who scripture depicts our God to be and this is how we must see him. So regardless of your current situation or what is happening around you, know that God is good. His thoughts and plans for you are of good.

Romans 8:28

28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

In whatever you are facing, he is working things to turn out for your good because that is who he is. He is good!

This does not mean that all that happens to us will be pleasant and we do not have to call pain good. It means that even though evil pervades our fallen world, God is able to turn every circumstance around for our long-range benefit.

In this dark world, one thing that shines forth and is forever a constant is that God is good.

Lord help me to see and experience your goodness in this dark world. Help me never lose sight of your good even in the face of struggles.
