Purpose 2
1 Timothy 2:3-4
Yesterday, we engaged in the meaning of purpose for the believer, helping us understand how a believer finds their purpose. Today, we will continue by explaining how we ought to live out this purpose.
1 Corinthians 2:1-2
New King James Version
1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
Starting from this point is crucial, as it cannot be overemphasized. Throughout the history of the Church, numerous teachings have emerged that attempt to drown out or dilute the true message. The Apostles consistently emphasized the need to warn against false doctrines, never holding back in their efforts to protect the integrity of the Gospel.
Galatians 1:6-8
New King James Version
6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel,
7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.
Colossians 2:8
New King James Version
8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
Warnings to the churches are replete in the scriptures, urging believers to ensure they have been taught the true Gospel and to stand firm in it without being swayed.
Therefore, in your quest to fulfil your purpose—knowing God and making Him known—do you have the undiluted Gospel, free of any blemish? Do you know the right things about this God that you so passionately want to tell the world about? It might be counterproductive if all you have is anything except the true Gospel.
What is the Gospel? It is the Good News that God has accepted the death of Jesus as payment for our sins and has since given the Holy Spirit to anyone who believes, granting them eternal life.
Now that we’ve discussed the first part about fulfilling purpose, let’s move on to the next point explained in this scripture:
1 Timothy 2:3-4
New King James Version
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
The text above clearly depicts the will of God for all of humanity. Throughout history, we find God continuously working towards this aim. Even the Bible is referred to as the compendium of the plan, provision, and announcement of salvation.
Therefore, if one were to be asked, “What is the one thing that is most important to God?” It would most likely be the salvation of all humanity.
Understanding this helps us refocus and redirect our minds from whatever else might have previously been our utmost priority and replace it with the priority of our Creator. He had an aim in mind before creating you, and if you truly love and honour Him, you ought to know that His love language is the salvation of mankind, demonstrated through Jesus’ sacrifice.
Romans 10:13-15
New King James Version
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”
The first verse above shows us briefly how far and how much God has done for us in salvation through the finished work of Christ. All that is left for a person to do to be saved is to believe in what has been done.
However, the apostle raises a question in verse 14: How can people call on Him if they have not believed? How are they to believe in someone whose existence they are unaware of? And even more, how can they know the gospel when they haven’t been preached to by anyone?
This point must be emphasized because, in salvation, God did all that needed to be done—from planning to dying and resurrecting to giving us the Holy Ghost. But He left just one thing for us to do: to share the Good News of what He has done.
This great task is enough to consume the passions of any person for their entire life. There is no greater cause or more noble endeavour to embark on. Therefore, one of the most important steps toward fulfilling purpose for the believer is sharing the Gospel and evangelizing to the whole world.
The phrase “the whole world” in the statement above is crucial, as it encourages believers to dream bigger than they have ever dreamt before and to labour to bring those dreams to reality. Purpose in God will not only ignite a desire to speak to people about Jesus but also inspire a drive to excel in your career.
This excellence is necessary because a source of income is required to sustain not only yourself and your family but also to support the spread of the Gospel and the flourishing of His work in your proximity.
Fulfilling your purpose in God will push you to improve and stretch yourself beyond what you ever imagined. For instance, the Bible tells us about the people who received the faith in the New Testament. They often had to travel to new cities with different cultures and sometimes new languages. Fulfilling their purpose required these individuals to learn new languages and take on jobs to support themselves in these new cities.
Purpose will drive you to become a person of influence because the words you speak are so important that they can save lives. Therefore, it is paramount that people find value in you and want to listen to you.
Purpose in God will have you picking up vocations, sometimes separate from your career in art, music, the media, and many others, to ensure that this message reaches the farthest parts of the earth and receives the attention it deserves. This dedication and willingness to grow highlight the comprehensive nature of purpose in God, affecting every aspect of our lives.
In conclusion, understanding purpose from God’s perspective changes everything. His plans for you are so mind-blowing and guaranteed to make you the best version of yourself that you could ever imagine.
Now that you know your purpose, what do you plan to do with it? What will you do next?
Prayer Point:
Lord Jesus, I thank you for all that has been learnt today, I pray that a passion for your purpose affects every single part of my life. My life never remains the same and I exert myself completely for you.
