Joy: Our Inward Reservoir
Philippians 4:4
Have you ever met someone whose joy seemed untouchable, who smiled with genuine gladness, even in the middle of difficult or painful circumstances? Or perhaps you’ve walked into a Christian gathering where people were dancing, shouting, and leaping with praise while you stood silently, unsure whether you were out of place or missing something.
It might have seemed excessive at first, or maybe even strange. But what you witnessed wasn’t just emotionalism or hype; it was the overflow of joy that springs from the Spirit of God within.
For the believer, Joy is not just a feeling tied to good days and comfortable outcomes. Joy is part of our spiritual DNA. It is a fruit of the Spirit, a mark of the regenerated heart, and a supernatural response to the reality of Christ within us!
Contrary to the belief that Christianity is dry or overly solemn, Scripture reveals that joy is to be the natural and continuous posture of the believer. Whether we are surrounded by abundance or navigating a wilderness season, our joy remains unshaken because it is rooted in something unchangeable, which is God Himself.
Joy for the Christian is based on revelation, not circumstance. It is not about everything going well but about knowing who you are and whose you are. When you have a revelation that you are a child of God, justified by faith, and carrying the Holy Spirit within, your entire perspective on life changes.
Your joy doesn’t come from external victories, but from the reality that you are secure in Christ and deeply loved. You are no longer moved by every wave of life, because the One who calms the storm lives inside you.
Romans 5:1–2
New King James Version
1 “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
This kind of joy is what enabled Paul to write some of the most joyful letters in the New Testament, not from a palace or a place of comfort, but from a prison cell. Despite being chained, he could write to the Philippians and say:
Philippians 4:4
New King James Version
4 “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!”
Paul’s joy wasn’t because of his situation. It was in spite of it. He was modelling a profound spiritual truth: that joy is not circumstantial. It is a constant choice to trust in the goodness of God, even when the evidence around you tempts you to despair. And this isn’t a suggestion, it’s a command. Rejoice always. And in case you missed it the first time, Paul repeats: Again I say, rejoice!
1 Thessalonians 5:16
New King James Version
16 “Rejoice always”
What a powerful and liberating mindset: to live from a place of consistent joy, knowing that God is our source and our delight. When you are anchored in Him, you don’t need everything to be perfect to be joyful. Joy becomes your default, not your reward.
Psalm 16:11
New King James Version
11 “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
What a beautiful promise, but here’s the plot twist for the believer: we carry the presence of God with us now. The same presence that fills heaven with joy resides within us by His Spirit. That means joy isn’t something you need to “find” at a special event or worship night. It’s something you can live in daily, because the very source of joy, God Himself, abides in you.
Dear believer, joy is not passive. It’s not something you wait for, it’s something you put into practice daily!
This outward expression of joy often mirrors what is happening within. It’s not about personality or mood. It’s about posture. Choose joy. Choose praise. Even when your flesh resists it, let your spirit lead. Sing. Dance. Thank God aloud. Remind your soul of His goodness.
Jesus affirmed this same truth to His disciples:
John 16:33
New King James Version
33 “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
He didn’t promise a life without trials, but He did promise His peace and victory. That’s the foundation of our joy. We are not overcome by the world, because He has already overcome it.
Often, people have turned from the true source of life and joy, trying instead to find fulfilment in things that ultimately leave them empty.
2 Corinthians 2:11
New King James Version
11 “Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
One of the ways to resist the enemy is to take a stand in your mind. The mind is the battlefield, and we are instructed to guard it fiercely. In James, we read:
James 4:7
New King James Version
7 “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
This resistance happens as we submit our minds to God’s Word. When the enemy tries to whisper lies like “you’re not good enough,” “nothing will ever change,” “God has abandoned you”, we respond with truth. We take those thoughts captive and align our minds with what God says. While we can’t always control what happens around us, we can absolutely choose what happens within us.
So today, decide within yourself that you are going to fix your eyes on Christ and let joy overflow. Practice joy. Express joy. Protect your joy. Rejoice in the Lord, not just when you feel like it.
Prayer Point
From today onwards, the joy of the Lord is my strength. Joy is my reality and a fruit of my born-again Spirit. Nothing can steal my joy, not tribulations, trials and persecution.
