Leaps & Bounds: Honour for The Set Man

Ephesians 4:11

Do you know that receiving from someone we don’t trust is nearly impossible? This is because when skepticism clouds your mind, even the most valuable gifts can sit untouched and remain unused. This principle stands both in our natural world and more profoundly in our spiritual lives — especially during special meetings where God speaks through His appointed vessels.

Before we can properly receive what God has for us through His set man, we must first position ourselves with the right heart attitude because reception begins with honour and faith. Like a closed hand cannot grasp what’s being offered, a heart closed by doubt or dishonour cannot receive divine deposits that flow through God’s vessel.

Remember when Jesus went to His hometown and stood in the synagogue; full of power, ready to teach and heal but was unable to do so because of their unbelief and lack of honour?

Let’s see the text:

Mark 6:1-3
New King James Version

1 Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.

2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, ‘‘where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!

3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us? So they were offended at Him.

Jesus came to His city to teach the word and in the course perform miracles but He could do no mighty work there.

Mark 6:5
New King James Version

5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.

Isn’t that shocking? That the Son of God, unlimited in power was limited and could not work as many miracles as He would have wanted because of their unbelief, lack of honour and overfamiliarity?

Thus far, we have learnt how to receive as well as how to cultivate hunger such that all your expectations are met and exceeded but as important as these are, there is another powerful way to prepare for a special meeting which is honour.

Honour means to highly revere a person or thing, it means to place value on them. As believers, honour is a valuable currency in our kingdom such that it can translate to faith. It is a very important tool when it comes to receiving from God and His vessels because simply put, you cannot receive from a man you do not honour.

Ephesians 4:11
New King James Version

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers.

God uses men to bless men and He has given gifts in the form of men for the perfecting of the faith and the edifying of the believer. Therefore, the furtherance, growth and edification a believer needs can be found only in the set man God has placed over him.

As believers, we are called to honour the set man God has placed in our lives. When we fail to honour them, we hinder ourselves from receiving the full measure of what God wants to deposit into our lives.

The Jews struggled to receive from Jesus because they saw Him as merely “Joseph’s son” (Mark 6:3-5). Their lack of honour limited what He could do for them. Similarly, when we dishonour or treat lightly the spiritual authorities God has placed in our lives, we miss out on the grace they carry for our growth, direction, and breakthroughs.

2 Kings 4:8-10, 14-16
New King James Version

8 Now it happened one day that Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So, it was. As often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food.

9 And she said to her husband, ‘Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly.

10 Please, let us make a small upper room on the wall; and let us put a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lampstand; so it will be, whenever he comes to us, he can turn in there.’

14 So he said, ‘What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered. ‘Actually, she has no son, and her husband is old.’

15 So he said, ‘Call her’. When he had called her, she stood in the doorway.

16 Then he said, ‘About this time next year you shall embrace a son.’

Remember the Shunammite woman who perceived Elisha to be a man of God and she honoured and received him? This act of honour positioned her to receive what her heart desired most—a son.

Jesus himself emphasized this principle in

Matthew 10:41
New King James Version

41 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward.

Notice the connection; receiving (honouring) the prophet positions you to receive the same reward that the prophet carries. If you receive them as just another preacher, you’ll leave with just another sermon. But, if you receive them as God’s anointed vessel, you receive all that God has in store for you.

Scripture is replete with men who honoured the set man placed above them. Moses had Joshua, Elijah had Elisha, and Paul had Timothy. Throughout Scripture, we see how honouring the “set man” positioned these individuals to receive a double portion of what their ministry gifts carried. This principle remains active today.

Leaps and bounds is not over. The Abuja meeting isn’t going to be just another gathering; God is sending words, prophecies and an impartation through His servant but, your posture determines how well you will receive. You must raise your honour level through the roof and ready your heart for all that God has in store for you through His sent man. You cannot afford to let familiarity get in the way of all that God has for you.

Remember the outcome when Jesus went to His hometown because He wasn’t received the right way, there was only so much He could do but that will not be your case!

So, how can you honour God’s sent man?

Come hungry, not casual; This is a divine appointment with God, not merely a social event, so it’s crucial to approach it with the seriousness it deserves. The posture of your heart matters; do everything you can to ensure your heart is in the right place, and a powerful way to achieve this is through prayer.

Come expectant; As your level of expectation grows, so should your honour for the occasion. Follow instructions diligently —this cannot be stressed enough. Whether it’s something as simple as “pay attention” or “begin to pray,” do not take any instruction lightly.

Just like the centurion servant who honoured Jesus profoundly by requesting Him to speak a word from afar, have faith and anticipate the impossible during this meeting!

PRAYER POINT
Father, thank You for the set man you’ve placed in my life. Help me to honour him rightly, and I position my heart rightly, help me recognize the grace You have placed upon him. Let my heart be open to receive all You have for me through him.
