Living Sacrifice: Walking in Love
Galatians 5:22-23
Everybody has experienced a low point at least once in their lives. You would agree that there were times when life was a little difficult, filled with disappointment, low finances, and uncertainty.
However, a single act of love, knowledge, prayer, or financial support from a fellow believer transformed your mood and reminded you that God sees you. This must have given you the courage to go on and reminded you to continue putting your trust in God.
This shows us the importance of our service to other believers. God would have us show love to others with humility and He didn’t just instruct us to do this but showed us the very first act of love by dying for us.
Ephesians 5:1-2
New King James Version
1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.
2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
1 John 3:16
New King James Version
16 By this we know love because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
Jesus, being the perfect representation of God, isn’t just a message to believe but also an example to follow. He is the perfect example of sacrificial love that we ought to embody as Apostle Paul instructs in the first text. He was writing to the church in Ephesus and urged them to imitate Christ in all they do— especially in their lovewalk.
In the second text, John says we should walk in love as Christ did, giving Himself as a sacrifice— which is the ultimate show of love. His love was selfless, unconditional, and sacrificial. Scripture refers to this love-led sacrifice as a fragrant offering that was pleasing to God, how beautiful!
This beautiful sacrifice was made on your behalf. Jesus gave Himself for you and me, showing His love for us!
We cannot as recipients of such pure and undeserved love of God, live our lives without showing this same love to other believers.
Jesus’ sacrifice was one that birthed salvation for all mankind. And because of this salvation, we received a new heart— a heart more inclined to do God’s will.
Galatians 5:22-23
New King James Version
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control. Against such, there is no law.
Now, our understanding of love as believers isn’t as the rest of the world understands it. It doesn’t depend on our ability and isn’t limited by our weaknesses or personal preferences.
This love is not just a feeling; but a fruit of that same Spirit we received at salvation. By yielding to the Spirit of God working in us daily, we bear this fruit of love towards our brethren.
Romans 5:5
New King James Version
5 “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
We can show love to others not just because of their personalities or actions but because it springs up from our insides by the Spirit. The more we are in line with the mind of God and the more we rely on God’s strength, the more His love and every other fruit of the spirit flow through us. We are empowered by the Spirit to live lives that are a sweet fragrance to God.
As aforementioned, Jesus Christ is our example and prototype and the sacrifice He made on the cross is one that came from a place of love. This love inspired Him to give up everything for our sake even when we were so undeserving, hence, it teaches us and should spur us to live above grudges, bitterness, and anger; yearning to see everyone through the lens of Jesus.
Philippians 2:3-4
New King James Version
3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Walking in this love requires us to be forgiving, kind, and generous in all our relationships and this is where our service to other believers comes in. Our love walk ought to show in our interaction with men, deliberately choosing to prioritize others above ourselves, it is seeking the well-being of everyone in every interaction.
Love for the saints should spur you to service to God and other believers, this shows in your interaction with your brethren and even in your local church.
This kind of selfless love stems from a place of humility. This text reminds us to esteem others better than ourselves and this is obvious in how we talk, how we speak and how we act to others. Rather than bring people down, we are to resist pride and seek to raise others even in speech.
When we exude humility, it is easier to respond to a crisis with patience instead of irritation, love, and understanding instead of judgment and service instead of self-interest.
Ask yourself today;
Are your actions reflecting Christ’s love?
Do you forgive as freely as He forgave you?
Do you embody the fruits of the Spirit?
What can you do differently moving forward?
Remember daily that you are a living sacrifice, make an intentional effort to live for Christ and not yourself. Choose love over resentment, humility over pride, and service over selfishness because this is what your life in Christ entails!
Know that when we walk in love and humility, we not only live a life that gives honour to God but we also reflect and reveal God’s heart to those around us.
Prayer Point: Father, help me live a life that reflects love just like Christ. Teach me to forgive freely, serve selflessly, and reflect Your heart in all I do. From now on, I walk in love in my service to God and the saints.
