Harvest: Backed by the Spirit
Mark 16:20
Imagine walking up to someone bound by sickness or affliction and, with complete confidence, speaking healing into their situation. Picture witnessing chains of bondage breaking before your eyes as you declare freedom in Jesus’ name. Can you see yourself being used by God in such a powerful way?
Throughout this week, we have been exploring the various dimensions of soul-winning and our role in God’s end-time harvest. Today, we will discover from Scripture how the demonstration of the Spirit’s power accompanies effective evangelism.
Mark 16:20
New King James Version
[20] “And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.”
The early disciples understood something profound about evangelism that many of us have forgotten: the gospel message is meant to be accompanied by demonstrations of God’s power. When the disciples went out to preach, they weren’t alone. The Lord worked with them, confirming the message they preached through signs that followed.
These weren’t just random displays of power. They were strategic confirmations of the truth being proclaimed. God was essentially putting His divine signature on the message through miraculous signs.
Acts 3:6-11
New King James Version
[6] Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”
[7] And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
[8] So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God.
[9] And all the people saw him walking and praising God.
[10] Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
Preaching in Solomon’s Portico
[11]Now as the lame man who was healed held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch which is called Solomon’s, greatly amazed.
Notice what happened after Peter and John healed the lame man. The miracle created an opportunity—it opened a door for the gospel message to be received. The people’s hearts became receptive because they witnessed something that defied natural explanation.
When Peter stood up to preach, he had an audience whose attention had been captured by the miracle. He didn’t perform the miracle to draw attention to himself or to make a name for himself. He performed it as a pointer to the message of Jesus Christ.
Many of us have relegated miracles to the apostles, prophets, or pastors, believing that such demonstrations of power are reserved for a select few. But Scripture tells us differently.
John 14:12
New King James Version
[12]”Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”
Jesus didn’t limit this promise to a specific group. He extended it to anyone who believes in Him. The same Holy Spirit who empowered Jesus and the early church is living inside of you today. You have been authorized and empowered to demonstrate God’s power as you share the gospel.
It’s important to understand that miracles are not an end in themselves. They are meant to point people to Jesus and confirm the truth of the gospel message.
1 Corinthians 2:4-5
New King James Version
[4]”And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
[5] that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. “
Paul understood that intellectual arguments alone weren’t enough to transform lives. People needed to witness the power of God in action. When we combine the preaching of the Word with demonstrations of God’s power, we create an environment where faith can flourish. However, we must remember that while miracles can open hearts, only the gospel can save souls.
Romans 1:16
New King James Version
[16]”For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”
God is ready to prove Himself and His Word if you allow Him to do it through you. He wants to work miracles through your life every day as you step out in faith to share the gospel.
The key is believing enough in the power of God that works through you. Not doubting what God can do through a yielded vessel like you. Not limiting God’s power based on your own inadequacies or past experiences.
When you go out to evangelize, go with the expectation that God will confirm His Word with signs following. Go with confidence that the same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead lives in you and wants to demonstrate His power through you.
Prayer Point:
I declare that as I step out to share the gospel, the Holy Spirit works with me, confirming the Word with signs following. I believe that the same power that worked through the early church works through me today. I point people to Jesus through the gospel and the demonstration of God’s power.
