Ephesians 1:17

New King James Version
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him

Paul already taught that they have the spirit in verse 13 so he was not talking about a new spirit. Instead, that they would receive wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of God by the same Spirit.

As a believer it is important for you to see that revelation knowledge is the next most important thing after salvation. After salvation, you must grow in the knowledge of God and the knowledge of all that has happened to you as a result of salvation.

Paul went ahead to teach them things about salvation and all that is accrued to them became of salvation. This means that this revelation knowledge is gotten from scriptures.

II Timothy 3:16-17
New King James Version
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The Bible says scripture is advantageous for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness to the end that a believer is equipped. The idea of being complete and equipped here can be likened to the process of furnishing a new apartment to make it habitable.

This is what the Word of God is able to do to the believer. The Word of God is able to furnish the believer. The Word of God is able to take a believer who is a seemingly ordinary person and transform him into a person fit for God’s work.

The Word of God can effect change in us. We can be transformed when we stay in God’s Word. The woman caught in the act of adultery was brought to Jesus and the end of the interaction was “go and sin no more”. This is not good counsel. This the transformative power of God through His Word. The Word was enough to cause her to change and Jesus knew this.

The Scriptures you have today is as potent as God’s Word directly from His lips. We must understand that spending time in God’s Word can cause a change in us. We begin to grow as we spend time in God’s word. There is no growth in God outside growth in His Word and growth is not coincidental.

I Timothy 4:15
New King James Version
15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Here, Paul tells Timothy to give himself wholly to the teachings handed to him. This mean that growth in the word requires effort.

Growth never occurs coincidentally. We must be able to give ourselves to the Word of God in READING, STUDY AND MEDITATION. This is the only way we would be able to grow.

Joshua 1:8
New King James Version
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

The Word of God is too powerful to remain on the pages of a book. The Word of God must be on your lips and it must be the meditation of your heart at all times. You must be able to devot time to reading God’s word, studying and meditating on it. You must be hungry for God’s Word in a way that every time spent with God’s Word leaves you yearning for more. This is the only way to grow in God.

I Peter 2:2
2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby

The Bible shows that we must develop a hunger for the Word in order to grow. The Word of God is necessary for growth in the faith and we must develop a hunger for God’s Word. In fact, hunger for the Word of God is indispensable when it comes to growth in God.

A good example of someone who portrayed enviable hunger for God’s Word is David.

Psalms 119:97
New King James Version
97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.

Psalms 119:103
New King James Version
103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth!

This is David, a man in the Old testament. David spent a huge part of this chapter talking about how he has found delight in the Word of God. He spoke about the way delighting in God’s word has kept Him.

You have a more robust reservoir of God’s Word than David did. You have God’s Word with better revelation and more clarity. If David could say this about God’s Word then this can be your reality and much more. The Word of God can become enjoyable to you. You can set your affection on the Word of God: you can train yourself to become a person of the Word. If David could do this without the Spirit within then you can love God’s Word much more.

There is much more you can do if you give yourself to God’s word and as a believer you must be hungry for more. You might have been doing well with God’s Word but you can always do more and this is a call to do more.

Prayer Point
As I have learnt the importance of hunger for God’s Word for my growth, I declare that as I pray now, an insatiable hunger for God’s Word is stirred in my heart.
