Good God: The Nature of God
Psalm 145:9
Many times, as believers, we sing of God’s goodness, we testify about His mercies, and we declare His faithfulness in different areas of our lives.
Yet, when life grows dark, our hearts might whisper, “Is God still good?”
In this new devotional series, we will set our gaze on the nature of God Himself. Before we turn to the hard questions of life, we must first establish who God is.
Take a moment to remind yourself that understanding who God is will anchor you even when life seems unsteady!
God has revealed Himself to humanity in two main ways:
General Revelation, which is the revelation of God to all people, at all times, and in all places. Everything you see around you testifies that there is a God. If you pause and look closely, the world itself is speaking of Him.
Romans 1:20
New King James Version
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.
Notice here that creation itself leaves humanity without excuse; the power and divinity of God are evident in what He has made. So, when fear or doubt creeps in, look around; you are surrounded by evidence of God’s goodness and power. Trust Him.
Another way general revelation is seen is through conscience, morality, and reason. This reminds us that God is the ultimate moral standard. When your conscience nudges you toward right, it is God’s voice confirming that He is good.
Special Revelation refers to how God has chosen to reveal Himself through miraculous means. This includes physical appearances of God, dreams, visions, and the written Word of God. The most important of these is the revelation of God through Jesus Christ. Let this sink in: God Himself came near to show us who He is.
From these revelations, we learn of God’s attributes: His love, His mercy, His justice, His holiness, and His goodness.
Today, we will focus on His goodness. Keep this in your heart: all His attributes work together, and they do not contradict one another.
Psalm 145:9
New King James Version
9 The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works.
God’s goodness is not selective, it covers all His works, including you. Even when circumstances feel dark, His goodness remains constant over your life. Do not let your current feelings convince you otherwise; hold on to the truth of God’s word!
Acts 14:17
New King James Version
17 Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.
Every provision in your life, the food you eat, the air you breathe, the seasons that sustain the earth, is evidence of His goodness. So, when life seems ordinary or challenging, remember that each blessing is proof of God’s love and care. Rejoice in them.
The greatest expression of God’s goodness is seen in His plan of salvation.
1 John 4:8-10
New King James Version
8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
God’s love is active and sacrificial!
Dear believer, when you begin to doubt about God’s goodness, remember that He sent Jesus to redeem you!
John 3:16
New King James Version
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
The cross is the ultimate declaration of God’s goodness. So don’t measure God’s love by your circumstances, measure your circumstances by His love. Let the cross remind you that you are never outside His care.
Now you may ask: If God is good, why do bad things still happen?
The answer is simple: in God’s goodness, He created free moral beings. For beings to be free and moral, they must have the ability to make choices, either good or evil. Free will is the cause of evil in the world, not God. We live in a fallen world.
Think of this metaphor: God’s goodness is like light. Light exists on its own; darkness is the absence of light. Darkness only occurs when light is removed. The same is true of God’s goodness. Evil is simply the absence of good. It came as a result of the free opportunity to not choose good.
Romans 8:28
New King James Version
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Even when life seems chaotic, God is working. So dear believer, don’t be discouraged by what you see. Trust that He is orchestrating everything for your ultimate good and hold firmly to His promises. Keep your eyes on Him, not on the storm.
Prayer Point
Father, teach my heart to know that You are good both in the good times and the bad times.
