As Christ Did: The Gift of Healing
Acts 19:11-12
In today’s devotional, we seek to answer these questions by looking at the life of our prototype; Jesus.
One thing we can see and note throughout Jesus’ life and ministry in his time on earth is his willingness to heal the sick.
Matthew 8:2-3
New King James Version
[2] And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
[3] Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Matthew 8:5-7
New King James Version
[5] Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him,
[6] saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.”
[7] And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
The New Testament, the gospel books to be exact, are replete with situations like this where Jesus’ immediate response portrays his willingness to heal and these texts are just one of those numerous occurrences. Jesus went about doing good, every single chance he got.
Later in the same chapter, the bible records a few other miracles and one particularly striking event;
Matthew 8:16
New King James Version
[16] When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick.
This is so powerful. The Bible says Jesus healed “all” who were sick. Not some, not many but all. Jesus’ life and ministry showed us the Father’s heart—He is always willing to heal, and He is always able to heal. And in Jesus, you do not only have a message to believe but an example to follow. If He healed all who were sick, you too, like Jesus, will heal the sick.
Before leaving the earth, Jesus spoke about believers. He said there will be signs that accompany our faith.
Mark 16:17-18
New King James Version
[17] “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
[18] they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
This was Jesus’ charge to His disciples — and by extension, all believers before He left the earth. You must know that the power to heal is not restricted to pastors, evangelists, or any specific group of believers. Jesus clearly states that “those who believe” will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.
The early church embraced this mandate with boldness and faith. In Acts chapter 3, Peter and John encountered a man crippled from birth, sitting at the gate of the temple called Beautiful. The man asked for money, but Peter knew that He had something better to offer him and he manifested this power as demonstrated to him by Jesus in His time on earth. And we see in verse 7 that the man immediately received His healing!
Acts 19:11-12
New King James Version
[11] Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul,
[12] so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.
This testifies to the power of the Holy Spirit working through ordinary believers, just like you and me! You may think this sounds like stories or that such experiences feel elusive and unreachable, but guess what? The Bible says: “These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name…they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well” (Mark 16:17-18).
If you are a believer, these signs follow you!
You have healing hands!
You can heal the sick!
This is true about you because you have received the same Spirit Jesus operated in.
Acts 10:38
New King James Version
[38] how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
Ephesians 1:13
New King James Version
[13] In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.
This passage affirms that you, too, have received this same Spirit by which Jesus healed. The life and ministry of Jesus were marked by healing to everyone who came to Him. Through every healing miracle, He demonstrated both the willingness and the power of God to heal. However, Jesus’ ministry wasn’t meant to be admired from a distance, it was an example for us to follow.
As believers, we are not only recipients of Jesus’ miraculous works but also partakers in His mandate. The same Spirit that empowered Him to heal is at work in us today. This truth is not confined to stories in Scripture; it is a reality for every believer.
Healing is not just a possibility, it is a calling and a privilege for every believer. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, you are equipped to bring healing and hope to those around you.
Healing is not just a story from the Bible; it is a reality for every believer today. In Jesus, you have an example to follow and the power to act. You are anointed with the Spirit to bring healing to those around you.
So, step out in faith today. Lay hands on that sick relative. Healing is possible through your hands so, intentionally look for sick people and lay your hands on them. Exercise and walk in this power that you carry!
Prayer point
Father, as I go about my day-to-day activities, Miracles are wrought through me and every sick is healed. I recognize the power I carry by the Holy Spirit and I walk in it.
