If you have ever watched movies set in ancient times, you would understand clearly the picture of a loyal servant. This servant has surrendered all personal rights, following every command of the master without question. Their actions are not guided by personal desire but by the wishes of the one they serve. Their entire identity is wrapped up in faithful service.

As believers, this is exactly what we are called to be. Not casual helpers, but devoted servants whose lives are fully surrendered to the Master.

Yesterday, we learnt and understood who a bondservant is and today, we would be learning what servanthood entails.

Jesus Himself showed us the perfect example of what true servanthood looks like.

Philippians 2:7-8
New King James Version

7 “but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.

8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”

Look at the extent of Jesus’ servanthood! He didn’t just serve when it was convenient or comfortable. He surrendered everything—His heavenly glory, His comfort, and ultimately His life. When it came to fulfilling the Father’s will, Jesus held nothing back, going all the way to death on a cross to accomplish God’s plan of salvation.

In a world constantly pulling us toward self-focus and personal ambition, God calls us to a radically different path—that of a servant whose single priority is expanding His kingdom and helping others find salvation.

But what does being God’s servant really mean?

Romans 12:1
New King James Version

1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

Notice Paul’s language here—”a living sacrifice,” this isn’t about casual service or part-time commitment. This is about laying everything on the altar—your time, talents, dreams, resources, and future. When we truly understand our role as God’s servants, it transforms every aspect of our existence.

We no longer make decisions based primarily on what we want or what society values. Instead, like Jesus in Gethsemane, we learn to submit our entire lives to God’s purposes:

Luke 22:41-42
New King James Version

41 “And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed,

42 saying, ‘Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.'”

What is this will of God that should top our priority list as true servants?

1 Timothy 2:3-4
New King James Version

3 “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,

4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Everything in God’s plan centers on the salvation of souls! From Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross to the Great Commission given to every believer, God’s heart has always been for the lost to be found and reconciled to Him.

This Commission wasn’t offered as a suggestion but delivered as a command before Jesus ascended into heaven.

Matthew 28:19-20 New King James Version

19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.”

True servanthood means making soul-winning the center of our lives. When we realign our priorities to match God’s heart for the lost, everything else falls into proper perspective. Our jobs become platforms to reach the lost, our friendships become opportunities for evangelism and our resources become tools for Kingdom advancement.

Think about it—what greater service can we offer than participating in the eternal rescue of souls? When we lead someone to Christ, we’re not just improving their earthly circumstances; we’re literally changing their eternal destiny!

This is why Paul was so passionate about reaching the lost.

1 Corinthians 9:22
New King James Version

22 “To the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.”

Paul understood that true servanthood requires flexibility, humility, and a laser focus on God’s redemptive mission. He was willing to adapt his approach, set aside personal preferences, and endure persecution, all for the sake of reaching souls with the gospel.

God’s heart has always been for reconciliation with His beloved creation. Since the moment sin entered the world, God has been working toward restoration and redemption.

As His servants, we have the privilege of joining Him in this mission. But make no mistake—it will cost us everything. True servanthood isn’t about Sunday attendance or occasional ministry. It’s about surrendering our entire lives to God’s redemptive purpose.

Jesus Himself said:

Mark 8:34-35
New King James Version

34 “When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, ‘Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.'”

Here is the paradox of Kingdom servanthood—in losing our lives, we find them. In surrendering our agenda, we discover our true purpose, we die to self and experience abundant life.

Today, I challenge you to embrace true servanthood. Make God’s will for soul-winning your highest priority. Look at your neighbourhood, your workplace, and social circles through His eyes. See the lost as He sees them—precious souls for whom Christ died. Then ask yourself: “How can I, as God’s servant, be used to reach these souls with the gospel?”

Remember, your service to God isn’t measured by your title, position, or public ministry, but by your willingness to align your entire life with His redemptive purpose. That’s what being a bondservant is—living no longer for yourself, but wholly for Him and His Kingdom.

Prayer Point:
Lord, today I surrender my life completely to You as Your servant. Transform my priorities to match Yours. Give me Your heart for the lost and help me to see every encounter as an opportunity to advance Your Kingdom. I no longer live for myself but for You and Your redemptive purpose.
