In today’s world, we often hear about purpose: finding it, living it, fulfilling it. People search for meaning in careers, relationships, and personal achievements, hoping to uncover the reason for their existence.

Yet, as we dig into the Scriptures, we discover that our true purpose as humans was defined right from the very beginning of creation in the book of Genesis. True purpose is not found in worldly pursuits, but in fulfilling that which was set for us at the beginning of creation.

Genesis 1:26
New King James Version
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion… “

Here, God set humanity apart from the rest of creation. We were made in His image, reflecting His character, nature, and purpose. But what does this mean for us today?

It’s easy to get lost in life’s demands, our jobs, relationships, and ambitions. Yet, there is a deeper calling for us: consecration- a life set apart for God, fulfilling the purpose for which we were created.

In Eden, we see a picture of mankind living in perfect harmony with God. There was no separation, no struggle to obey, and no confusion about purpose. This is what consecration looks like; living in a state of complete reliance and connection with God.

Yet, if we’re honest, life can feel like a constant struggle between serving God and pursuing our own desires. This struggle began with Adam and Eve in Genesis 3.

Genesis 3:6-7
New King James Version
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

When the serpent tempted Eve, something changed. For the first time, mankind saw something outside of God’s will and considered it good for personal gain.

Isn’t this still our struggle today? We see opportunities that seem to promise us happiness, security, or fulfilment, and we take them; often at the cost of disobedience or distraction from God.

That separation from God in the Garden of Eden brought death (physical and spiritual). Ever since, humanity has been trying to fill that gap with various things- success, relationships, entertainment but none of it can replace the life that comes from being in communion with God. We are at our best when we are connected to Him, fulfilling our purpose through devotion.

Throughout the Bible we see men who were devoted to God and the result of their devotion.

Genesis 6:9
New King James Version
9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.

In a world full of corruption, Noah chose to walk with God and his devotion saved him and his family. Even when no one else reverenced God, he remained committed to Him and his plan.

Abraham too, lived a life of consecration. When God asked him to sacrifice his only son Isaac, Abraham’s response was one of obedience. He trusted that God would provide, even in the face of unimaginable sacrifice (Genesis 22:5-9).

These examples show that consecration is more than just following rules; it’s about maintaining a relationship with God. We were created for constant fellowship with Him, and straying from that, leads us off course. The Israelites, after witnessing God’s miracles, turned to idols when they felt abandoned (Exodus 32:1-8). How often do you do the same? Seeking quick fixes for comfort or security, only to end up feeling empty.

In a world full of distractions and temptations, it’s easy to lose sight of our true purpose. But God continually invites us into deeper relationship, a life of devotion that leads to fulfilment and joy. As believers in Christ, we have been given the Holy Spirit to help us stay connected to God and live out our purpose.

As you go through life, you must constantly return to the source- God. Consecration isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily commitment to align your heart, mind, and actions with His will. It’s a life of selfless devotion, seeking to glorify God in everything, knowing that only in Him can you find true purpose and meaning.

Ask yourself: Is my life set apart for God? Am I living in communion with Him, or have distractions and idols taken His place? Remember, you were created for more, let your life reflect the consecration God desires; a life fully devoted to Him.

Prayer Point
Father, from today, by your Spirit, help me live fully devoted to you. I put away anything that exalts itself above you and fix my gaze on you, living how I ought to.
