Fight for the Faith: Proving God Exists

Have you ever noticed that proving God’s existence isn’t very difficult in our communities? Most of us have had an uncle, aunt, or relative who was involved in the occult at some point. We’ve heard stories of supernatural encounters, spiritual manifestations, and divine interventions that make the reality of the spiritual realm undeniable. But at some point, in your evangelism and witnessing, you’re going to meet people who genuinely don’t believe that God is real and have never had these experiences. So how do you defend your faith to such people?

Today, we’re putting forward a compelling claim for the truth that God is real. But before we dive into the arguments, it’s important to understand the different positions people hold when it comes to God’s existence. There are three main worldviews you’ll encounter are atheism, agnosticism, and theism.

Atheism is the lack of belief in every proposed God or gods, or in any divine being whatsoever. Atheists do not believe that any God exists.

Agnostics believe that it’s impossible for human beings to know anything definitive about how the world came to be or whether God exists or not.

Theism is the belief that at least one God exists, specifically referring to a belief in a supreme creator or divine being that can intervene in the world.

The question is: which of these positions is most reasonable based on the evidence available to us?

Romans 1:18-20
New King James Version
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.

20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”

Paul is telling us that God, through His physical creation and visible attributes, has made it possible for us to discern Him through what He has made. The evidence for God’s existence is so clear in creation that those who deny it are “without excuse.”

Let’s examine from creation, three of the most compelling arguments for God’s existence that, when put together, create an overwhelming case that God is real:

1. The Cosmological Argument: This argument is based on the simple logical principle that everything that begins to exist must have a cause.
The logical progression is straightforward:
Everything that begins to exist has a cause.
The universe began to exist
Therefore, the universe has a cause

But what could cause the universe to exist? The cause must be:

  • Outside of space and time (since it created space and time)
  • Immaterial (since it created matter)
  • Incredibly powerful (since it created all energy)
  • Personal (since it chose to create)

Only God fits this description. When atheists ask “Who created God?” they’re missing the point. God, by definition, is eternal and uncaused. Only things that begin to exist need a cause. The universe began; therefore, it needs a cause. God is eternal; therefore, He doesn’t need a cause.

Now to the next argument.
2. The Teleological Argument:
Look around at the incredible complexity and fine-tuning of the universe. Scientists have discovered that the fundamental constants of physics are precisely calibrated to allow for the existence of life. If gravity were slightly stronger, stars would burn out too quickly for life to develop. If it were slightly weaker, stars would never form at all.

When you see a watch, you don’t assume it assembled itself randomly; you know there was a watchmaker. When you see a painting, you know there was a painter.
Hence, when you see creation with its intricate design and perfect balance, logic demands that there was a Creator.

Next is the moral argument.
3. The Moral Argument:
Why do you instinctively know that torturing innocent children for fun is wrong, not just culturally inappropriate, but actually, objectively evil? Why do concepts of justice, fairness, and human dignity resonate across all cultures throughout history?

If we’re just evolved animals driven by survival instincts, why do we have moral consciousness that often goes against our self-interest? Why do we feel guilty when we do wrong, even when no one is watching?
These are moral truths.

Moral truths that are true regardless of what anyone believes about them can only exist if there’s a moral lawgiver who transcends human opinion. If God doesn’t exist, then moral values are just cultural preferences or evolutionary byproducts with no ultimate significance. But we all know in our hearts that some things are truly right and others are truly wrong.

This moral awareness points to a moral foundation beyond humanity; it points to God.

When you put these three arguments together, they create a compelling case for God’s existence that is both logically sound and evidentially supported.

The cosmological argument shows that the universe requires a first cause. The teleological argument demonstrates that the design in creation requires a designer. The moral argument proves that objective moral values require a moral lawgiver.

Each argument alone is powerful, but together they point decisively to the existence of an eternal, powerful, intelligent, and moral Creator — exactly what the Bible describes as God.

When you encounter an atheist or agnostic, ask them: “What’s your explanation for the universe’s beginning? How do you account for the fine-tuning that allows life to exist? Where do objective moral values come from in a godless universe?” Challenge them to provide better explanations for the evidence we observe.

Don’t be intimidated by intellectual challenges to your faith. The evidence for God’s existence is scientifically credible, philosophically sound, and logically compelling. You can engage confidently with skeptics because truth is on your side.
Armed with this knowledge, step out into communities today and take them for Christ!

Prayer Point
Lord, help me to study and understand this evidence so I can remove intellectual barriers to the Gospel from the minds of people. When I encounter worldviews that challenge Your existence, give me wisdom to present these truths clearly. Use these arguments to open hearts and minds to Your reality.
