Finishing Strong: Sustaining Prophecies
James 1:25
Remember the law of motion? An object remains at rest or continues moving unless acted upon by an external force.
If your life is going to change, something drastic and external has to happen to shift your course and set you in motion. In the same way, acting on a prophetic word can set your life in motion toward your purpose.
But even things already in motion can be slowed or stopped by opposing forces. Life happens, distractions arise, responsibilities increase, and the year gets busy.
After learning what to do with prophecy and taking your first steps in obedience, the question becomes: How do you stay on track? How do you keep moving in the direction God has already set you on? That is where sustaining prophecy comes in.
James 1:22-25
New King James Version
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;
24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
It is only the doer of the word—the one who continues in it, who sees the reward of obedience.
Prophecies can be brought to manifestation through carrying out instructions and practising daily obedience. Prophecy is not a one-time event; it requires stewardship. What God has spoken must be held onto and carried intentionally until it comes into full manifestation.
Scripture shows us people who knew what to do with God’s word.
Moses, even after all his complaints and fears at the burning bush, responded to God’s word in obedience. He returned from Midian to begin carrying out exactly what God had commanded him.
Exodus 4:18
New King James Version
18 So Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and said to him, “Please let me go and return to my brethren who are in Egypt, and see whether they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.”
Moses didn’t stop at just receiving the instruction—he stewarded it. He lived a life of consecration, following divine instructions step by step, regardless of the challenges or delays.
Similarly, Abraham responded to God’s word by building an altar as an act of worship and a commemoration of God’s presence with him—a picture of consecration and commitment.
Genesis 12:7-8
New King James Version
7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.
From these examples, we learn that prophecy is meant to be acted upon. It is not enough to hear the word or receive it once; it must be stewarded, nurtured, and lived out.
Let’s look at some practical ways to sustain prophecy:
1. Recognition
Recognition is the first step to sustaining prophecy. You must recognize what God has given you and acknowledge what He has placed in your life. He has spoken His word concerning your life—the same words that had the power to frame the world, so you cannot take it lightly.
I Samuel 10:16
New King James Version
16 So Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found.” But about the matter of the kingdom, he did not tell him what Samuel had said.
When Samuel anointed Saul as king, much had happened. He experienced God’s power, saw the signs Samuel had told him of earlier, and even prophesied in the company of prophets. Yet, despite these powerful events, Saul acted as if nothing had changed. He said nothing, did not reflect on what had happened, and simply moved on as though it were an ordinary moment.
Unlike Saul, you must learn to recognize prophecy for what it is and treat it with seriousness. Acknowledge the word God has spoken over your life. Reflect on it, meditate on it, speak it over yourself, pray over it, and picture it in your spirit.
Don’t leave things to chance—set structures to remind yourself to do these continually throughout the year. Place the words of prophecy somewhere you can see them constantly.
2. Trust in God
Sometimes, we face challenges while carrying out God-given visions because we try to achieve them in our own capacity instead of relying on Him. God has a track record of using ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary and impossible feats, and their stories all have one thing in common: the zeal of the Lord performed it.
When the angel announced the birth of Christ to Mary, it was unprecedented. Yet she accepted the prophecy in faith. Scripture does not record her taking extraordinary measures to fulfil it herself; she simply believed God’s word and aligned herself with it. The zeal of the Lord performed it, just as Isaiah had spoken.
Isaiah 9:7
New King James Version
7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
As you run with prophecy, give up control and trust in God completely, knowing that the zeal of the Lord will accomplish what He has spoken.
3. Stay Consecrated
Consecration keeps the heart aligned and the spirit sensitive. You must stay consecrated—you cannot afford to be lukewarm. Prophecies do not thrive in lukewarmness; they flourish in hearts fully devoted to God.
Ephesians 5:17-18
New King James Version
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
Stay continually filled with the Spirit. Dedicate yourself to prayer and the study of God’s Word so that your spirit remains sensitive and attuned to His voice.
God has given you prophecies—steward them to fulfilment. Recognize all that has been spoken over you, act on it, speak over the words daily, and start being the person God has called you to be. As you see these things active in your life, don’t stop praying over them, and you will see even more!
Prayer Point
Lord, I recognize the words that You have spoken concerning me. Help me to faithfully steward them until I see their fulfilment. Indeed, the zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish it.
