Hearing from God: Through His Word

Yesterday, we established a powerful truth: you can hear from God.

Not because of how many years you have been a believer, but because you are His. Hearing God is not reserved for the few, it is the reality of every believer. And while many expect to hear God only through dreams, visions, or a booming voice from heaven, the truth is: God speaks every single day, and He often does it through the pages of His Word.

So, if you’ve ever wondered, “How do I hear God?” this is where you begin.
God speaks through Scripture.
And not in a distant way. He speaks personally. Actively. Daily.

But the real question is: Are you listening?
Many believers find themselves here, wondering if God is speaking, why they can’t hear Him, and whether they’ve missed something.

God is still speaking. And one of the most faithful, consistent ways He does so is through His Word.

Yes, the Bible, the same one gathering dust on some of our shelves. That book you’ve read a few verses from and maybe felt a little disconnected from. It’s not just an ancient book filled with religious history. It is living. It is active. And it is speaking to you right now.

Hebrews 4:12
New King James Version
[12] For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The writer of Hebrews is teaching us that God’s Word has power because it’s alive! When Scripture speaks, it reaches beyond your emotions and intellect, down into the very heart of who you are. It cuts through distractions. It exposes motives. It divides between what feels right and what is right.
The word of God doesn’t just comfort, it convicts. It doesn’t just soothe, it reveals.
So if you’re waiting to hear God, start by reading Him.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
New King James Version
[16] All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
[17]that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Paul writes this to Timothy that all Scripture, not just the parts that feel inspirational, is God-breathed. That means every word in your Bible wasn’t random. It was given to teach, correct, train, and shape you.
So again, if you’ve felt stuck spiritually, the question may not be “Is God speaking?” but “Am I listening through His Word?”

Colossians 3:16
New King James Version
[16] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom…

Paul’s use of the word “dwell” here is powerful. In Greek, it’s enoikeō, meaning to make a home; to reside permanently. Paul is urging the Colossians not to let the Word visit occasionally, like a guest, but to let it take up permanent residence, influencing every thought, decision, and response.

Have you made room in your heart for the Word to settle?
God’s voice through Scripture grows clearer the more we let His Word dwell richly in us.
Maybe you’ve been waiting for a dramatic sign or a prophetic word to know God’s direction. But what if it’s already there, written plainly, waiting to be read? What if the answer to your confusion is tucked in the pages you keep skimming?

Psalm 119:105
New King James Version
[105] Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

The psalmist here isn’t talking about floodlights or stadium beams. A lamp lights only a few steps ahead. It requires you to stay close. That’s what Scripture does.
Scripture isn’t outdated or irrelevant. It’s your anchor in a chaotic world.

Romans 12:2
New King James Version
[2] And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…

This renewal happens when we engage the Word daily. The more time you spend in the Word, the more your mind is transformed. You stop asking, “What do I want to do?” and start asking, “What is God saying in His Word?”

Have you ever been in a situation where you had to make a decision? unsure whether to go or to stay, and suddenly, a verse you read days ago comes to mind? That wasn’t random. That was God speaking. That was the Spirit using the Word you planted.
Jesus said in John 14:26 that the Holy Spirit would remind us of all things He has said. But how can He remind you of what you’ve never read?!

There is no spiritual shortcut around this. If you want to hear God clearly, you must read His Word consistently. Not as a checklist, but as a pursuit. Not as a duty, but as devotion.

Don’t let guilt keep you from starting again.
So what if you’ve been inconsistent? So what if the Bible feels dry right now? Open it again. Start with one verse. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak. Let the Word do its work.

Jesus Himself prioritized Scripture. Even after rising from the dead, when He met the disciples on the road to Emmaus, He didn’t just reveal Himself with a miracle. He opened the Word.

Luke 24:27
New King James Version
[27] And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Even Jesus trusted the Scriptures to reveal Himself. Shouldn’t we?

Start small if you need to—five minutes a day with an open Bible and an open heart can transform your spiritual life. Choose a book and read a small portion daily.

Prayer Point
Father, I thank You that Your Word is alive and active. From today, I stir up in me a desire to seek Your voice through Scripture.
