Koinonia: The Bond

There is something that a lot of people do, especially in a multi tribal state like Nigeria.
You know how it is when you meet someone, maybe at work or at school and you both discover you are from the same tribe. And immediately, you start speaking your tribal language to each other and even laughing at things that seem very relatable. It just happens naturally because you share something already.

Now imagine something even deeper than tribe, deeper than blood, deeper than language. Something familiar to every believer. This is the same Spirit in them that also dwells in you. A connection that you don’t have to build from scratch.

Looking through scripture, it is understood that when man fell, we lost intimacy with God. We lost closeness and communion with Him. We see the effect and nature of sin on relationships: Adam and Eve began blaming each other. Cain killed Abel. Violence, division, and hatred multiplied across humanity. Sin didn’t just separate man from God—it fractured human relationships.

But that was never God’s design for humanity. We were created for fellowship, for intimacy; not only with God, but also with one another. And in salvation, something powerful happens: we are not only restored to God, but we are brought into a family.

Ephesians 2:19
‭New King James Version‬‬
19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.

The word household means family. This means when you are saved, you are saved into a family. You are saved into God’s family.

Scripture goes even deeper in 1 Corinthians 12:13
‭New King James Version‬‬
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

By one Spirit, we were all baptized into one body. No matter your background, status, or origin, once you are in Christ, you are part of His Body. And when we think of a body, we think of unity. Every system, every part is connected. Blood flows through vessels supplying life to every part. No part exists independently. The body is one.
That is how we must see the Body of Christ.

We were all brought into this Body by the same Spirit. The same Spirit in you is in every believer. Because of this, we all cry “Abba, Father”, not individually alone, but as a family.
God is not just your Father; He is our Father.
This shared life is what the Bible calls KOINONIA—true fellowship.

We see this in 1 John‬ ‭1‬:‭3
‭New King James Version‬‬
3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
‭‭‬
This means our connection with one another flows from a shared union with Him. So yes, we have fellowship and intimacy with God, but that should flow into our relationship with other believers. It is not just association. It is not just gathering. It is the sharing of the same life: the life of Christ within us.
Your bond with believers is spiritual, not natural. It is deeper than culture, deeper than preference, even deeper than biological ties. Earthly families are temporary, but the family of God is eternal.

Philippians 2:1-2
‭New King James Version‬‬
1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,
2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

Paul calls this “fellowship of the Spirit.” The word fellowship here means communion: a deep sharing, a participation in the same reality. But we are not only given this bond, we are also called to walk in it.

Paul encourages the believers in:
“being like-minded”: having a shared perspective shaped by Christ. It is choosing to align our thoughts with truth, not personal opinions.
“Having the same love”: Loving others with the same sacrificial, unconditional love Christ has shown us.
“Being of one accord”: Moving together in unity, not division. Pursuing the same purpose.
“Being of one mind”: Being inwardly united, not just outwardly gathered.

Scripture also exhorts us in Hebrews 10:25
‭New King James Version‬‬
25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

We are called to gather, not out of obligation, but because fellowship is the natural expression of the life we share.

You must carry this mindset:
Every believer you meet carries the same Spirit as you. You are connected by a bond that is stronger than human blood and cannot be broken because it is rooted in the eternal Spirit of God.
And from that shared life, something beautiful flows. You can genuinely love your brothers and sisters by the Spirit.

Prayer Point
Father, thank You for bringing me into Your family. Thank You for the gift of Your Spirit that unites me with other believers. Teach me to walk in true fellowship. Let me love others from the life of Christ within me, and help me to value and pursue unity in the Body.
