Light: Clarity In Direction
1 Corinthians 14:33
Throughout this week, there has been an emphasis on and a reminder of God’s declaration for this year, the year of Light.
On Monday, you were reminded of the great power God has placed within you for the work, and of the need not to let it lie dormant. On Tuesday, you were shown that the light you carry must be anchored in tenacious, unwavering faith in God. On Wednesday, the call to come out of fear and take steps in boldness was emphasised.
And with all these, it is quite important to tie it all together. As much as a lot of people are confident in the words spoken to them this year, it is important to address those who still feel confused. What do you do when you sense God speaking but you are not entirely sure what to do with what you heard? What happens when the direction feels real but the way to start is not yet clear?
The first thing God wants to establish in your heart is this. He is not trying to confuse you. He is not speaking in riddles or leading you in circles. Apostle Paul makes this plain in his letter to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 14:33
New King James Version
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
Apostle Paul wrote this in the context of discerning spiritual things and correcting the church in Corinth, but it gives you an understanding of the nature of God. Where there is genuine confusion, clarity is available, and God is patient enough to give it to you. The same God who declared this year your year of light is not going to leave you stumbling in the dark about where to point that light. He leads because that is His nature.
When it comes to understanding His assignments, God might not show you the full picture before you begin moving. He shows you enough to take the next step, and as you take it, the next one becomes clear. This is a way He has led His people.
Overall, when the step in front of you still feels unclear, you are allowed to ask. This is something most believers shrink from. You are allowed to seek confirmation. God has never been angered by someone who genuinely wanted to be sure they had heard Him correctly.
Look at Gideon in Judges 6. An angel appeared to him, called him a mighty man of valour and gave him a clear assignment. And Gideon still asked for confirmation.
Judges 6:36-37
New King James Version
36 So Gideon said to God, “If You will save Israel by my hand as You have said—
37 look, I shall put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You have said.”
God answered. Gideon asked again, and God answered again. This is the patience of a God who would rather you move with certainty than stumble in confusion. If Gideon, who had seen an angel, still asked for confirmation, you can do the same. And you are allowed to bring your honest doubts to God. You do not have to perform boldly in public and hide in fear privately, that is not what God is asking of you. Jesus, in the garden of Gethsemane, did not pretend.
Matthew 26:39
New King James Version
39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
He brought His honest heart before His Father. And one thing you can take from this verse is that after speaking to God, He found the strength to go forward.
Every time a person in scripture brought their honest fears before God, God responded in a way that strengthened their faith. Do not leave your place of prayer with your doubts hidden. Talk to God about what you are actually feeling. Your honesty with Him opens the door to greater clarity.
There is one more thing God makes available to you when your direction feels unclear, and that is corroboration. God is not limited to speaking only to you about the word He has given you. He can confirm it through the people around you. He spoke to Joseph in a dream about Mary while Mary was still processing what the angel had said to her. He also confirmed this to Elizabeth in Luke 1:41-42
New King James Version
41 And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42 Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”
Before Mary could even explain what had happened to her, God had already prepared Elizabeth to confirm it. When God has spoken something significant over your life, He is willing to confirm it through more than one voice. Ask Him to make it clear to the people around you. You do not need to fight to be believed when God has already spoken.
Once you have clarity, once the direction is clear, God will almost always ease you into it. The word God gave you was never meant to be a leap into nothing. Begin step by step. Let people see you in your element. Build your track record. You have the light. You have the faith. You can receive clarity to walk in the direction God is giving you. The same God who gave you the word is patient enough to confirm it, clear enough to make it plain, and faithful enough to back every step you take in His name.
Prayer Point
Father, I pray for clarity on the direction You have given me. Where I have been filled with doubt, give me confirmation. Lead me step by step and help me act on everything You have shown me.
