Light: In Step
1 Corinthians 15:10
You probably remember this, or maybe you even did it yourself. As a child, dark rooms were scary. And even when someone handed you a torchlight, you would walk to the door, see the room and sometimes still be afraid to go in. Just standing there at the entrance, torchlight in hand, fully equipped, but your fear overshadows the light in your hand.
This picture can be likened to you who has been called to spread in this year of light but has refused to move. And light that refuses to move illuminates nothing.
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:10
New King James Version
15 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
Paul does not take the credit for the kind of man he had become; he is clear that it is God’s grace. But he also does not pretend that he was passive. He said the grace bestowed upon him was not in vain because he laboured. He prepared and put in the work. Notice the balance here. Grace and labour. Together.
This matters because it is easy to spiritualise stillness. It is easy to tell yourself that you are “waiting on God” when what is actually happening is that you are getting very comfortable. You can have a divine assignment and still sit leisurely. You can have a word from God over this year and still not have done a single thing to position yourself for it. The grace that God poured over this year of light is not a substitute for your movement. It is fuel for it. It is the wind that propels your steps, but you still have to take the step.
What have you done with the word God gave you? Have you been sitting in your comfort zone? Have you been waiting for the perfect moment? Have you let the opinions of men silence the assignment on your life?
Now, for many people, like the little child afraid of the dark, the problem is fear. And this should be confronted directly, because fear is not a new problem. It did not start with you.
When Adam fell in the garden, his first instinct was to hide. He heard the sound of God walking, and he ran. Fear is as old as sin itself; it is deeply instinctive, and it does not disappear simply because you have been called.
Jeremiah 1:6-8
New King James Version
6 Then said I: “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”
7 But the Lord said to me: “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ For you shall go to all to whom I send you, And whatever I command you, you shall speak.
8 Do not be afraid of their faces, For I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord.
Look at Jeremiah. God came to him with a clear assignment. And yet Jeremiah’s response was: “Ah, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”
Jeremiah did not doubt that God had spoken. He doubted himself. He looked at his own limitations and concluded that the assignment was too large for him. And that feeling that you are not ready, not qualified enough, is exactly where many of you are sitting right now. God’s response to Jeremiah was, “Do not be afraid of their faces, for I am with you to deliver you”. Dear believer, get up and move; God is with you, He is one who sends his child and backs him up.
When you see the early church in Acts. They were gathered together, overwhelmed, and they prayed. And Acts 4:31 tells us
New King James Version
31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
The Spirit of God and boldness go hand in hand. The Spirit of God does not leave you in fear. He emboldens you. Don’t choose to stay in fear; it will keep you from the great things you need to achieve. In that case, what do you do with the fear?
God already told Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1:17
New King James Version
17 Therefore prepare yourself and arise, And speak to them all that I command you. Do not be dismayed before their faces, Lest I dismay you before them.
“Arise and prepare yourself.”
Think about your exams. The paper that terrifies you in the week before you study does not terrify you the same way after you have sat down and read through your notes or the teaching material. The platform that intimidates you today will not intimidate you once you have rehearsed. The opportunity that feels impossibly large right now will feel different when you have quietly and consistently built the muscle for it.
Preparation is faith expressed in action. Start where you are. Every small opportunity you prepare for today is quietly training you for the larger one tomorrow. God does not hand greater responsibility to those who have been careless with what they already have. Stop making excuses and start building the competence and the discipline that the assignment requires. Stop waiting for conditions to be perfect before you begin.
This is your year of light. But light does not sit still. Light advances into darkness; it does not stand at the edge and wait for the darkness to retreat first. It goes in, and darkness gives way. The power is already inside you. The word has already been spoken; it’s time to labour. The spaces God has called you to transform are still waiting. The people whose lives your light is meant to touch are still in the dark.
What has God called you to do this year? Where has He told you to shine? Let go of fear and begin to move in step with boldness by the Spirit of God.
Prayer Point
Father, I declare that fear does not hold me back from all You have called me to do. The words You have said over me this year will not be wasted in my hands. I commit today to labour and prepare rightly. I step into every assignment You have placed before me with boldness.
