Today we begin a new devotional series titled Money Matters and it promises to be as blessed a series as the last one. In the ‘Round the clock’ series, we discussed extensively the importance of being wise with our time (Chronos) so that we are better prepared for opportune times (Kairos). In this series, we will be exploring the application of wisdom in a very crucial aspect of our lives- Money Matters.

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1‬:‭15‬-‭17‬

King James Version

15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

16 cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

Here, we see Apostle Paul’s prayer for the church at Ephesus. That they receive wisdom and revelation knowledge by the Spirit. Our understanding of the scriptures informs us that he cannot be talking about a different spirit. Rather, he was referring to the Holy Spirit the believer receives at salvation (Eph. 1:13-14).

Revelation knowledge can be defined as the knowledge of what Christ has done in salvation and who we are and what we have as a result of what He has done. Amen. But it does not stop there. He also prays that they receive Wisdom by this same spirit- Spiritual Wisdom.

The Greek word for wisdom there is ‘Sophia’. This is the word from which the word ‘Sophisticated’ was coined. Wisdom therefore is the skillful application of knowledge.

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭24‬:‭3‬

King James V‬‬ersion

3 Through wisdom is an house builded; And by understanding it is established:

If we can utilize this spirituality wisdom, a good proportion of our problems will be solved. For instance, Wisdom would help keep your devotion in check because you know to take from within you and put fire on your prayer altar that seems to be waning.

We must also learn that for many things, prayer alone cannot sustain. It is the principles of wisdom that would sustain them. For example, Jesus walked on water. It does not change the fact that he would require and even use a boat for transportation from time to time. There is a natural order to things and God is the one who set these systems in place to produce.

Learn this and you will see consistent results as you apply the wisdom.

Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭13‬

King James V‬‬ersion

13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: But a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭4‬:‭7‬

King James V‬‬ersion

7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: And with all thy getting get understanding.

The place of wisdom in the life of the believer cannot be overemphasized and over the next couple of days, we will be exploring the application of wisdom in the area of our finances.

For today’s devotional, we would narrow it down to ‘saving’. Why is it important that we save?

  1. Money is a tool: Money is not the solution to every problem but with the use of money, we can solve a lot of problems. Think about paying off debts, and bills and even extending a hand of generosity. None of that would be possible if we did not have a good saving culture. So, for the sake of your family, your future, and your family, save money wisely.
  2. Money has wings: If there was one thing COVID taught it is this- if things are going well, prepare, save up! This is because we must realize that many times, it is not the devil attacking our finances, some of us just make poor financial decisions.

So, here are practical ways to save your money wisely:

  • Have an emergency fund: That way, when an emergency should come up, you would not run out of all your hard-earned money.
  • Living Expenses: Allocate some money that would be used to take care of your bare necessities.
  • Givings purse: If you are making more a lot of money, you could set aside a portion of it to financially assist those around you in need.
  • Savings purse: This has been emphasized earlier; especially as we make futuristic plans concerning ministry, and career.

Conclusively as it pertains to money, it is important to set aside your tithe from your regular source of income. The importance of this cannot be overemphasized because as a believer who recognizes God as his or her source, we must learn to give back as a way of contributing to the advancement of God’s kingdom here on Earth.

Prayer Point:

Father, I thank you for the wisdom your Spirit provides, such that I am never without help and I always know what to do. Help me apply this wisdom in my finances to the glory of your name and the advancement of your kingdom here on Earth.
