Genesis 1:1-3

Have you ever had a pet? Or have you ever had to babysit at any point in your life?

Well, I had a pet once a puppy Golden retriever which I had for 5 minutes. And by 5 minutes I mean we returned him as quickly as we realized that our schedule wouldn’t allow us to care for him properly.

It was either he would suffer or our schedule would suffer.

The biggest lesson we learned was about sovereignty. It may seem weird to say, but even though you control a puppy’s life, including its diet and movements, you aren’t truly sovereign until you teach it to have freedom within the boundaries of your guidance. While the puppy has freedom, you still maintain ultimate control, preventing it from chewing on shoes, touching or eating harmful things, or getting hurt. You ensure its well-being and survival while balancing guidance and autonomy.

Well, this is the same with the God we serve.

You know someone put it so well by saying “Only a sovereign God would allow free will knowing that he controls and can influence every outcome even though you have free will.”

The Bible says in Genesis 1:1:

Genesis 1:1-3

New King James Version

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

We know that this light that was created is not the sun because in

Genesis 1:14-17

New King James Version

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;

15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.

16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.

17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth,

God created the sun and the moon. So what is this first light that God created?

We have been taught severally  that the bible is meant to be read together. The Old Testament in the context of the new and vice versa.

When we go into the New Testament we see the Apostle Paul explain the text in Genesis saying

2 Corinthians 4:3-6

New King James Version

3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing,

4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake.

6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

In this passage, the Apostle Paul quotes God’s words from Genesis, highlighting how God brought light out of darkness. Paul is drawing a parallel between this creative act and God’s work in the hearts of believers. Just as God spoke and light emerged from darkness, He now shines light into the hearts of believers through His word and Spirit. This same divine power brings transformation to unbelievers as the Word and Spirit illuminate their hearts, transforming them from darkness to light.

Even though the devil has blinded their eyes, God can illuminate their vision with His radiant light, piercing through the darkness and bringing clarity and understanding of his word.

What do we learn from this? Well, regardless of the darkness, God is in control. He is sovereign.

1 Corinthians 2:7-8

New King James Version

7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory,

8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

From a human perspective, it may seem puzzling that the Messiah, who was believed to be the Almighty God, could be killed. However, through the lens of God’s sovereignty, His plan was being fulfilled, even in the exercise of human free will. The act meant to destroy God’s plan became the means of salvation, showcasing the triumph of divine providence over human limitations.

Beloved, I want to remind you of the sovereign God who holds your life in His grasp and can bring light into the darkest of circumstances. As the classic song declares, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” and that includes your life.

So, no matter what challenges you’re facing, know that He can bring order and clarity to the situation. This is not to motivate or console you, but rather, to share your reality with you so that you can confidently live, speak, and walk in the assurance of His guidance and control.

Many of you reading or listening to this devotional are at a crossroads, facing critical decisions about your career, job, relationships, family, or travel plans.
