Purpose: Excellence in Work

Proverbs 22:29

A man of God once said, “When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable.”
This profound truth applies to our lives as believers. When we don’t understand why God created us, we inevitably misuse the gifts, talents, and opportunities He has placed in our hands.

As believers, our ultimate purpose is clear: to know Christ and to make Him known. Purpose is that one thing for which you were created, at which you must succeed; else, every other thing you succeed at would not count. If we live without knowing Christ, growing in Him, and making Him known, then no matter what else we excel at, we have failed.

Understanding our divine purpose should transform how we approach everything else. We are called to live differently—marked by purpose, integrity, and excellence, not mediocrity.

Mediocrity settles for “good enough.” Excellence presses toward God’s best. Mediocrity asks, “What’s the minimum I can do?” Excellence asks, “How can I honor God fully with this opportunity?”

God calls us to excellence in all we do—ministry, business, education, or any vocation. Developing our skills serves our divine purpose by giving us credibility and influence.

Ecclesiastes 9:10a
New King James Version
10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…

When we excel in our earthly calling, we create opportunities to make Christ known where mediocre performance would close doors.

I Samuel 16:18, 22-23
New King James Version
18
Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the LORD is with him.”

22 Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”

23 And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.

David’s excellence in music opened doors to the king’s court. But notice what made him remarkable: skill combined with character. He was “a mighty man of valor,” “prudent in speech,” and “the Lord was with him.” His excellence became a platform for God’s purposes.

Genesis 39:4-5
New King James Version
4
So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.

5 So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house and in the field.

Even as a slave, Joseph served with such excellence that he was promoted to overseer. His commitment to doing his best brought God’s blessing to everyone around him. His excellence became a testimony of God’s faithfulness.

Daniel 5:12
New King James Version
12
Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and explaining enigmas were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar, now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation.

Daniel was described as having “an excellent spirit.” His God-given wisdom brought him influence in a foreign kingdom, making him invaluable to the king. His excellence gave him a platform to reveal God’s power.

These men show us that excellence in earthly assignments becomes the vehicle for divine purpose. Whether in the palace or prison, they served with diligence and brought honor to God. Their professional competence earned credibility, and credibility gave them influence to make God known.

As believers today, we have a greater advantage. The Holy Spirit empowers us to operate in wisdom and excellence beyond human ability. We are not ordinary people; the Spirit within us equips us for supernatural impact in natural spaces.

Excellence gives us credibility and opens doors for influence and ministry. When we’re known for integrity, skill, and commitment, people notice, and we earn the right to speak into their lives.

Colossians 3:23-24
New King James Version
23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,

24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

Excellence is not limited to the workplace. When we excel in careers, studies, relationships, and service, each area becomes a vehicle to make God known. Excellence gives us a platform for influence, and influence gives us the opportunity to fulfill our divine purpose.

Proverbs 22:29
New King James Version
29 Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.

This is not mere observation—it’s a divine promise. When you commit to excellence, God positions you for influence.

This is a call to action! A challenge for you to rise to excellence, to pursue growth with divine purpose, and to reflect Christ in all you do. Commit to growing your skills, pursuing mastery, and giving your best in every endeavor. Take that course if you must, go for that training, strive to be the best at what you do. But remember, you’re not pursuing excellence for personal glory or worldly success. You’re pursuing it as a platform to know Christ more deeply and make Him known more widely.

In doing so, you fulfill your purpose, honoring Him through the work of your hands and the excellence of your character.

Prayer Point
Father, empower me by Your Spirit to pursue excellence not for my own glory, but to honor You fully in all that I do. Help me see every skill I develop and every opportunity I excel in as a platform to make You known. I commit to growing, striving, and reflecting Christ in all areas of my life, knowing that my ultimate purpose is to know You and make You known.
