In ancient war, battering rams were used to lay siege. The idea of battering rams is that the opposition outside the castle will take a pointed tool and keep hitting it against the wall. The soldiers usually take turns to hit, such that there is a crack. The moment there is a crack in the wall, there is a note of victory. The goal of this devotional is to help you learn importunity in prayer.

Acts 12:5
New King James Version
5 Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church

Peter was arrested by King Herod and this was the church’s response. The Bible says they prayed constantly for his freedom. You must learn the importance of intensity and consistency in prayers. The church gave herself to ceaseless, intensive labour in prayer and there were results. In the latter part of this text, an angel appeared to Peter and freed him.

Acts 12:16
New King James Version
16 Now Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished In the pretext, while Peter knocked, they were still praying.

They prayed till they saw him released. They did not stop praying till their prayers yielded results. We must master the act of praying consistently till we see results. The things of the Spirit cannot be rushed. There is a need to stay long in the place of prayer concerning an issue. Consistency is important, but learning to stay long is even more important.

Mark 14:30-42 details the story of Jesus in Gethsemane. Historians say Jesus prayed up to three hours in that garden, praying just one prayer point. He did not leave that place till He gained strength for the task ahead. How long can you wait?

Luke 11: 5-10
New King James Version
5 And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves;

6 for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;

7 and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’?

8 I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

9 So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

At the start of the chapter, Jesus was teaching about prayer. The door was opened only on the account of this man’s persistence. Let this encourage you. Imagine what your consistency in prayer can birth and let that push you to keep praying.

Heartfelt and consistent prayers are a demonstration of faith. In the book of James, we learn that results are not far from the man that prays in this manner.

James 5:16
New King James Version
16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

Some translations say ‘the continual prayer of a righteous man produces wonderful results’. Reading this should stir up faith in you. Your prayers when done right can produce results. As you learn about your devotion in this season, always remember that prayer must be as consistent as it is fervent.

Prayer Point
In this season and beyond, my devotion is marked by consistent and heartfelt prayers. I pray till I see results.
