Reignite: Staying Ablaze
Leviticus 6:12-13
In the past few days, we have explored how to reignite the fire on your altar. You now understand that having a cold altar is not God’s plan for a believer. You’ve also learned how devotion should move from a place of duty to a place of delight and how to stir up dormant gifts. But once the fire is burning, how do you keep it alive?
Think of your spiritual life like a car. No matter how powerful the engine is or how advanced the technology is, without consistent fuel, the car will not run. In the same way, your spiritual fervor requires continuous fueling through prayer, the Word, fellowship, and a lifestyle of obedience. It’s not enough to experience a revival moment; the goal is sustained fire.
Today, we will be looking at some of the ways you can maintain spiritual fervor so that your altar remains ablaze, not just for a season but for a lifetime.
Leviticus 6:12-13
New King James Version
12. And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it; and he shall burn on it the fat of the peace offerings.
13. A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out.
To keep the fire on the altar burning, the priest went there every morning to add wood to it. From this you can know that maintaining spiritual fervor requires intentionality, consistency and discipline. Spiritual fire cannot sustain itself, you must not leave it to chance, you cultivate habits that will ensure that this fire keeps burning.
Romans 12:11
New King James Version
11. not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;
There is a diligence that must come with your service and devotion to God. You must take deliberate actions to ensure that you are always fervent because without these things, distractions, trials and complacency can easily put out your fire.
Daniel 6:10
New King James Version
10. Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.
Despite the threat of being thrown into the lion’s den Daniel prayed as was his custom. He did not let the threat of death stop him from praying. This action shows intentionality towards God.
After the day of Pentecost when the apostles received the Holy Ghost and many souls were saved, they continued to pray, teach and fellowship.
Acts 2:42
New King James Version
42. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
They did not take the time to rest. Great spiritual victories must be followed by consistency in prayers, study and every other thing that will keep the fire on your altar burning.
2 Timothy 1:6
New King James Version
16. Therefore, I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
From the text above, it is evident that accountability can sustain and strengthen a fervent walk with God. One of the ways you can remain fervent is to be accountable. Apostle Paul’s relationship with Timothy provided encouragement and correction for Timothy. Accountability will save you from complacency.
Some practical ways to build to maintain fervency in your spiritual life are:
i. Praying Daily: Like Daniel, set aside a time everyday to pray and ensure that you keep to this time. Plan your day around the time you pick to pray.
ii. Bible Study: Pick a time in your day to study the word of God and meditate on it.
iii. Fellowship: The instruction in Hebrews 10: 24-25 to not forsake the gathering of believers is very important. No believer is supposed to do life alone. Take advantage of the family you have in Christ.
Consistency in spiritual fervency does not come from sporadic encounters but from daily communion with God. Pray everyday, study and meditate on the word of God everyday. Like the priests in the old testament, keep your fire burning.
PRAYER POINT:
I declare that the fire on my altar keeps burning. I remain consistent in prayer and in the study of God’s word. I do not leave my spiritual fervency to chance.
