The dictionary definition of devotion is loyalty for a person or activity. It can also be defined as religious observance of something.

When it’s said that you do something religiously it connotes consistency or even an obsessive compulsion to do something. This means that devotion to something or someone implies a consistent, zealous, and increasing passion for that thing.

If your devotion to God does not sound like what has been described, something is lacking. God’s will is for you to lead a vibrant devotion. There is so much more to be experienced in God, so much that your devotion should never be stale.

The good thing is that you can always rekindle that passion and zeal for God if you are experiencing a drought.

‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭6‬:‭12‬-‭13‬
New King James Version
12 And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it; and he shall burn on it the fat of the peace offerings.
13 A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out.

Fire is a metaphor for the vibrant state of the temple of the believer. It indicates the ever-present presence of God in the temple of the believer as it was in the Old Testament. So you ought to burn non-stop. It should be an unseen thing for there to be a believer who is cold or lukewarm.

‭‭I Kings‬ ‭18‬:‭37‬-‭38‬
New King James Version
37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.
38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.

If Elijah, who didn’t have the Holy Ghost dwelling in him, could call fire on an external altar then you who has the Holy Ghost in-dwelling can call down fire on your internal altar. Fervor is your lot and if that is not your experience you can do something about it!

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭7‬-‭10‬
New King James Version
7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

In as much as you aren’t saved by your good works, they are a result of your salvation. So they may not have been necessary to get you saved, but they become necessary in the conversation of maintaining vibrancy in devotion.

At salvation, a seed of righteousness was planted in your heart and the fruit of that seed is the prayer, fasting, fellowship and all the things that edify us as well as bring glory to God.

Like we said in the beginning, devotion implies that you have an increasing passion for the things of God and this is not built in a day. There is need for diligence, consistency and consecration.

The power of consistency is in the fact that anything you do long enough becomes a habit and can influence your reality. So you may not feel like praying sometimes or studying sometimes or going to church sometimes but the more you do it, the more it shapes your reality and heart.

Consistency and diligence can birth fervency, it can awaken even more passion for God. It would shield you from contradictions. Your fire can so burn that every contradiction in your life dies.

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭16‬ ‭
New King James Version
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

At salvation, you’ve been given the Spirit of God. You must willfully walk in the Spirit. In the same way, you were made a temple of prayer at salvation but you must then willfully pray every day to keep yourself ablaze.

You were made an ambassador for. Christ at salvation but you must then willfully represent him everywhere you go. Discipline is a key factor in keeping your fire burning and warding off contradictions.

A consistent prayer life or study culture is not built by divine intervention. All the realities of a believer seen in scripture, although given to you freely, are appropriated by discipline. Fervor is about discipline, so take charge of your devotion. Here are some steps that can help you:

1. See what you want to be: put before your face examples to emulate. In the same way Peter saw Jesus walking on water and for him, it was an emblem of possibility, you also must surround yourself with such examples. What you see repeatedly you are more likely to do, associate with people who are consistent in devotion, be part of a local church that prioritizes prayer, study fellowship, etc. Watch things that fuel your desire for God.

2. Effort: as we have already established fervency doesn’t happen overnight, you must put in the effort. When it comes to your devotion to God, you can’t do too much. Think of the lengths you go to to ensure you pass an exam or even sustain a romantic relationship. All these require conscious effort. Put in the work and you will see results.

3. Accountability: the Bible says that iron sharpens iron, so have people that are growing along side you. People who can call you to order if you falter, people who will spur you up onto good works. Be part of small groups or even a service unit in church.

4. Structure: these come in handy especially when you don’t feel like being consistent. Have set times of prayer, set times of study, prayer meeting schedules, prayer partners, study and evangelism targets, worship playlists, etc. Where your diligence fails, your structures will save you.

Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭13‬
New King James Version
13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

You can’t afford to leave your devotional fervor to chance. Contradictions would haunt a man whose devotion fervor is cold.

Thankfully, we are empowered by God himself living on our inside to do his good pleasure. We are not alone. If it is God’s will for us to be fervent in devotion then God will help us to uphold it.

Any sleeping prayer altar can awaken again,  if you are experiencing a drought you can open up a gusher on your inside! Let your devotion never be the same from today.

Prayer Point:
Father help me to lead a vibrant devotion. I denounce apathy or laziness. My devotional fire is rekindled from now and it will never grow cold.
