Steadfast: Becoming a Word Man
2 Timothy 2:15
New King James Version
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
After salvation, the next most important thing for a believer is to grow in the knowledge of God’s Word. To grow in the knowledge of the Word of God it requires you to put in all diligence and effort. For instance, when you got admission to the University or High school, it wasn’t enough to have admission. You needed to attend your classes and study in order to be trained in your chosen field. Similarly, every believer must be given to the diligent study of God’s Word in order to grow in what he has received.
1 Timothy 2:3 -4
New King James Version
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
4 “who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
This is God’s desire. He wants to see that the testimony of every believer is that they continue to experience progress and joy of faith.
Studying God’s Word demands diligence; you must invest your time and commit to it. You cannot read God’s Word merely when you feel like it; it must become a habit. The key to being a good student of the Word is consistency. When you consistently read God’s Word, you are more likely to live a life that is in line with God’s purpose for you.
Ephesians 4:11-13
New King James Version
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,
12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the [a]edifying of the body of Christ,
13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
The assignment of a ministry gifts is to ensure that the people they lead experience progress and joy in their faith. Their role is to help believers grow in the faith. As the Apostle Paul said, him remaining with the church for a period they will experience growth in their faith.
If someone wasn’t praying or studying the Word before joining the church, within a few months to a year, there should be evident transformation in their devotion and prayer life. If someone is committed and following all the structures provided but still not growing, the issue may lie within them. Perhaps because they are not committing themselves to the structures set in that community or in that church.
Jude 1:3
New King James Version
3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.
If you must contend for the faith, you have to know, understand, and be a good exegete of the Word. One day in future your child, or your friend is going to ask you questions about your faith. So you must be willing to provide right answers, because someday, some way, and somehow, someone is going to ask you the hope for which you believe. In that situation, you must be a good exegete.
There are some practical approaches to becoming a good exegete of the Word of God: Have a target for your spirituality. In the next months which books of the Bible do you want to cover? How many sermons do you want to listen to? Also, create a Bible study plan and build a framework around it so that nothing is left to chance.
Joshua 1:8
New King James Version
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Being a good exegete also requires you to be diligent in study, this involves meditating on it. At the temptation of Jesus, he rebuked the devil with what He had studied in the Scriptures. It shows that knowing the Word of God by heart is useful in helping you to resist the temptations of the devil.
Additionally, you should also join a Christian community that will inspire you to learn. Also, make an effort to show up even when you don’t feel like it, This is how determination to study the Word is built.
Psalms 119:105
New King James Version
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
Finally, being a good exegete should show in the way you respond. When you are facing a challenging time, your response to that situation should be the Word of God.
Dear believer, remember the Word of God has great power. The Word of God is able to guide us at very aspect of our lives It is not just texts and letters but Spirit-inspired information from God that makes us wise unto salvation, teaches, corrects, guides and equips us for ministry. We get clarity and direction when we study the Bible. God guides us primarily through His word.
Prayer Point
