Times and Seasons: Timekeeper
Matthew 16:1-3
For a farmer, there’s the understanding that planting and harvesting are two very different seasons, each demanding a unique mindset, discipline, and response.
In planting season, the ground is hard, the sun is hot, and the results are not immediate. The farmer wakes up early, sows seeds diligently, trusting that in due time, the fruit of his labor will emerge.
In the season of harvest, the farmer becomes even more alert and urgent. He can’t afford to delay. Harvest is time-sensitive, what is ripe today may rot tomorrow. The farmer gathers his harvest quickly, reaping the reward of the earlier labor.
What you do with a season determines what you carry into the next one. If you miss a planting window, you can’t reap. If you mishandle a harvest, you lose fruit. Times and seasons matter.
In the same way, as believers, we are expected to discern seasons and recognize what God is doing and respond accordingly.
Jesus emphasized this in Matthew 16:1-3
New King James Version
1 Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.
2 He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’;
3 and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.”
They could predict the weather, but they couldn’t discern God’s activity among them. Jesus called them hypocrites because they sought a sign, yet ignored the obvious. In
Matthew 12:39-42
New King James Version
39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.
42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.”
What was Jesus telling them? Read and study the Scriptures. Everything you need to know is there. The people of Nineveh discerned Jonah’s message and repented. The Queen of Sheba discerned Solomon’s wisdom and traveled to hear it. Can’t you discern what God is doing now?
When you look at how God has worked both in scriptures and in the lives of people around you, you should be able to discern what God is doing – spiritual signs, spiritual times, and spiritual seasons. And pay attention to them! You must be intelligent enough to always be discerning: “What is this season about for me?”
Many people go through seasons of consecration, training, or testing, and misinterpret them as suffering or punishment because they haven’t discerned the times. They fail to understand God’s intentionality and perceive it as delay, even though God is never late.
Remember Lazarus; Jesus arrived “late” in human terms, but perfectly on time to demonstrate His power over death. Discern the seasons. Instead of complaining, ask, “God, what are You doing?”
Just as God can give a word and your actions can produce a different result if you don’t act on it within His timing, so too can seasons change. You have to be a timekeeper, discerning what God is doing in this season. The Bible speaks of times of refreshing; are you discerning these seasons and taking advantage of them for renewal rather than constant toil?
Jeremiah 8:7
New King James Version
7 “Even the stork in the heavens
Knows her appointed times;
And the turtledove, the swift, and the swallow
Observe the time of their coming.
But My people do not know the judgment of the LORD.”
Here, we see that even the simplest creatures follow God’s timing, yet the Israelites, who have been given divine guidance, fail to recognize or heed God’s judgment. May this not be said about you!
So dear believers, we must take time at the end of cycles to realign with what God is doing. A cycle can be the end of a year, a semester, a job, or a period of residency. Now, it is at the end of the first half of the year, and we are taking such a time during this year’s camp meeting.
There is a need for several times of refreshing and retreats in a year. This is how God has structured it. Have you experienced being pumped up after a special meeting, only for the clarity to fade within a couple of months? This shows you the need for multiple such experiences to stay grounded. Life happens, and it’s natural for the things of this world to distract you from what you’ve received. It’s understandable to struggle with devotion sometimes; the real concern would be if you don’t take advantage of those moments of growth refreshing. You need several experiences a year to stay in check. That’s why the church organizes continuous meetings – because your life depends on it!
To maintain consistent devotion, aim for at least one personal retreat every quarter, and when corporate times of retreat like these come about, take advantage of them. Your life’s priorities can quickly shift unless you constantly remind yourself.
While consistent training through many routine services is foundational, God has also structured our growth to be propelled by special meetings. Many can trace pivotal moments in their lives—a breakthrough, a calling, an impartation, to a specific special gathering. These are ordained events where God creates an emphasis in your life. Therefore, when special meetings are announced, do not take them for granted. They are opportunities for emphasis to be created in your life.
It’s that season again. Can you discern it in the atmosphere? We are just a few weeks away from what is poised to be one of the greatest meetings you’ve experienced: Camp Meeting.
This isn’t just another event; it’s about to be a life-transforming meeting. Do you believe so?
This year’s Camp Meeting will feature long hours of teaching and prayer. The goal is to separate you from your normal routine, allowing you to immerse yourself fully. Embrace the long hours, the intense prayer, and the sustained worship. Be prepared to step beyond your usual limits, for your destiny depends on it.
Prayer Point
Lord, help me discern this meeting for what it truly is. Create in me the hunger to prepare properly for Camp Meeting. Let me position myself to receive all that You have ordained for me in this gathering.
