Unashamed: Kingdom First
Matthew 6:33
Think about your morning routine. You wake up and immediately reach for your phone—checking messages, scrolling through social media, catching up on the news.
Then it’s the rush: getting ready for work or school, thinking about that deadline, worrying about that exam, planning what to say in that difficult conversation. Before you’ve even left your room, your mind is already juggling ten different things. And somewhere in all of that…is God.
If we’re honest, most of us have mastered the art of living incredibly busy lives while barely thinking about Jesus. We fit Him in when it’s convenient—a quick prayer before a meal, a scripture or verse when we’re anxious, church on Sunday if nothing else comes up. We’ve made Jesus one item on an endless to-do list, and usually not even at the top.
But, can you really call Him Lord if He’s not your priority?
We live in a world that constantly competes for our attention. There’s always something more urgent, something louder, something that seems to matter more in the moment. In this noise and chaos, it becomes dangerously easy to lose sight of what truly matters. That’s why as a Christian, there’s a constant need to stop, reorder your priorities, and refocus on what really counts.
And this is why we have been emphasizing on living unashamed and we have established our identity and the fact that we need to stand out separately from the world. Today, we would focus on an equally important topic.
One thing to note is that you have a purpose on earth. One that sets you apart from the rest of the world. And to live unashamed as a believer is to know what is priority in your life and stick to it. And that priority/purpose is simple but radical: Jesus and His Kingdom. Not just one priority among many—THE priority that shapes every other decision in your life. You need to understand that Christianity is not just about attending church services and “doing Christian things.” It’s about Jesus being the absolute center of your existence. Your purpose on the earth is to know God and to make Him known.
Jesus Himself made this clear:
Matthew 6:33
New King James Version
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
This is a Bible verse we quote often, perhaps too often, because familiarity can breed complacency. But pause and really think about what Jesus is saying here. What does it truly mean to “seek first”?
As humans, we naturally worry about what we’ll eat, where our next paycheck is coming from, how we’ll advance in our careers, whether we’ll get into that school, and how to escape the struggles life throws our way. Our minds are consumed with these concerns from the moment we wake up until we fall asleep. But Jesus says something revolutionary: “Don’t worry about all of that. Seek first My Kingdom.”
That word “first” is not a suggestion—it’s a command about order and priority. Everything else is secondary, no matter how urgent or important it may seem in the moment. Christ and His Kingdom are the priority; everything else comes after. Your life should revolve around seeking Him first—not just adding a sprinkle of Jesus to your already busy schedule, but prioritizing Him above absolutely everything.
But how do we actually seek first? What does this look like in practical terms?
Luke 9:23
New King James Version
23 Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.’
Seeking and following God is denying yourself, setting aside worldly pleasures, personal ambitions, and comfortable convenience and taking up your cross daily. This changes everything. It’s not a one-time decision; it’s a daily, deliberate choice to forsake everything else and follow Jesus wholeheartedly.
Look at what Jesus’ first disciples did:
Luke 5:11
New King James Version
11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.
Let’s get the context here. James, John, and Simon Peter were fishermen who had just experienced the biggest catch of their entire careers. After toiling all night and catching nothing, Jesus told them to launch their nets again. When they obeyed, they caught so many fish that their nets began to break and their boats started to sink. This was the catch they had dreamed about their whole lives—the kind of success that could set them up financially for years.
But here’s what’s remarkable: despite having the greatest professional success of their lives right in front of them, at the word of Jesus, they left everything and followed Him. They didn’t even stop to sell the catch. They didn’t negotiate for time to sort out their affairs. They didn’t ask Jesus to wait while they secured their futures. They simply walked away from it all because they understood something profound: following Jesus was more important than the biggest blessing their profession could ever offer them.
It wasn’t their jobs that mattered most. It wasn’t money. It wasn’t security or success. It was Jesus. Only Jesus.
Later, Peter would reflect on this decision:
Matthew 19:27
New King James Version
27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, ‘See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?’
This is what seeking first entails—leaving everything and following. Unapologetically. Not half-heartedly. Not with one foot in the Kingdom and one foot in the world. But being all in—following Jesus “with your full chest,” as we would say, or “carrying Jesus on your head” with total commitment.
This isn’t theoretical or abstract. Making Jesus your priority extends to everything you do.
It affects your daily schedule—how you spend your time and what gets your first and best hours.
It shapes your relationships—who you spend time with and how you interact with them.
It determines your financial decisions—how you earn, spend, and give your money.
It influences your career choices—what jobs you pursue and how you conduct yourself at work.
It guides your educational path—what you study and why. It even affects your entertainment—what you watch, listen to, and consume.
Making Jesus your priority shapes your entire worldview and how you interact with your environment on a deeper level. You cannot live unashamed if Jesus is just an add-on to your already full life. He must be the center, the priority, the foundation that everything else revolves around. When people look at your life, they should clearly see that it’s Jesus and His Kingdom first—not your career, not your comfort, not your reputation, not even your family.
This isn’t about neglecting your responsibilities or abandoning wisdom. It’s about ordering your life around what truly matters. When Jesus is first, everything else finds its proper place.
Think about the disciples again. They left their fishing business, but Jesus made them fishers of men who would turn people on the right path. They left temporary success for eternal impact. They left comfortable careers for world-changing ministry. And history remembers their names not because of the fish they caught, but because of the King they followed.
Are you truly putting Jesus first, or is He just another item on your priority list? Are you seeking the Kingdom first, or are you seeking everything else first and hoping Jesus will bless it?
Audit your priorities. Look at your calendar—what gets your time reveals what you truly value.
Check your bank account—where your money goes shows what you treasure.
Listen to your conversations—what you talk about most reveals what occupies your heart.
What do these things reveal about your real priorities?
If they’re not aligned with Jesus being first, it’s time to make specific adjustments. Start your day with Him before checking your phone or diving into work. Give Him your best time and energy, not your leftovers. Tell someone this week about your faith—don’t hide it or apologize for it.
Carry Jesus and His Kingdom with your full chest, unapologetically and unashamedly. Let people know where your allegiance lies. Make it obvious that He is your priority, and watch how everything else falls into place.
Prayer Point
Lord help me to seek your kingdom first and prioritise you in every area of my life. My job is not my priority, my family is not my priority, money is not my priority, you are my priority. I reorder my life so that you become the center. Amen.
